Hello

Wanted to hear what Yosemite users were able to customize.
Also here are few things I have tried and was successful.

1. cDock.app - Gives you that 3d dock, so much better than the 2d flat one.

2. Dark Menubar - Sys Pref > General > Check <Dark Mode>

3. Theme - I usually prefer Darker themes on the OS and was not happy with Yosemite's Transparent/Translucent buttons, I could hardly read the text on them.

Few tweaks in settings,
Sys pref > Accessibility > Check <Increasing Contrast> & <Reduce Transparency>
That kind of helped but I would still like to acquire a darker theme.

4. Chrome - Some nice Night browsing themes with the add-on called 'Stylish' and its themes.

5. Still looking for any customizing anyone has done with the iMessage.app. Would love to see a darker theme on it.

Care to share your customizations ?

GeekTool deserves a mention when talking about customizing of course. Such a neat application, been using it for many years since Snow Leopard.

It's an application that allows you to embed information scripts into your desktop (for those unaware). It's very handy and extremely easy to get addicted to and overdo.

I actually get so obsessive over using it that I just have to disable it and stop every now and again. I always use it for my docks though, to create a thin, transparent, less opaque 2D option. It's amazing, and one of my favorite third party OS X applications ever - if not my most favorite.

I wonder if that GeekTool thread around here still exists even, I'll have to search for it. I wish more people were into GeekTool and we had some updated, more advanced scripts flying around.

Thanks so much w0lf for cDock, the new version 8.1 works fine on my 2 systems, 1 MP and 1 MBP.
I hated Yosemite'S folders immediately, used Liteicon and sone icons found on Deviant Art's HP to get some sanity back.
Your Mavericks script cYose didn't work for me, maybe 'cause of the Liteicon substitutions or something else, but anyway I don't have to let my eyes get blasted by the stock incandescent Yosemite folders, so I didn't try to figure out why it didn't work.

Another thing I learned about changing icons of files and folders.

The format should be .icns then you can simply <Get Info> on any file/ folder and drag the .icns into the <Get Info> window to replace the icon.

So far i have changed the folder icons and cDock icons with that process and successfully.

I installed cDock immediately after upgrading to Yosemite. I like the Dark selection. Looks great on my dark wallpaper. I would have gone mad looking at the horrid Dock that is created once you tick increased contrast/reduce transparency setting which is oddly placed under Accessibility LOL. Yeah ok. I'm not quite sure where to drag a new icon into Get Info to change the icon. Thanks for starting this thread.

4. Drag the new .icns icon into the <Get Info> window. Up & left corner. Where the old icon is. Drag the new icon into it till u see a lil green '+' and then drop it.

Figured out how to create shortcut for sending item to trash can with (Command + S) if any1 wants to know. Its really simple.
Go to Sys prefs > Keyboard > Shortcuts > App Shortcuts > press the '+' to create a new shortcut > Name it "Move to Trash" and assign a key (Makes sure it says "Move to Trash" with a capital 'M' and capital 'T' or it won't work).

Also (Command + Alt + Esc) ... opens up the Force Quit menu and you know we all need to close those stubborn pesky programs that get stuck.

Another program I found very useful is TG PRO.. for sensing the heat in your system. I try to keep it under 80. It also controls the fans but I have not allowed that yet, not sure if I should

Next I am attempting to change the :-

1. Trash can icon. (Full/ Empty icons).
2. Apple icon - for the Apple drop down menu all the way left in the Menubar.
3. Safari skin to something darker and yet legible.

Will keep you posted how it goes.

I really like this tweak:

I think i did the steps properly but still don't see it in the Menubar.
Maybe because my menubar is filled up with other icons. lolx
I tried to make the Menubar font smaller so everything would fit, but to no success.
(Check out image below).


Themengine seems like a way to modify OS theme. But I have not attempted to figure it out so far. Since i already have Flavours 2. So many nice themes in it. I personally hate white interfaces and a little bit of transparency and translucency just messes it up more for me. Some buttons i could not even read at all.

Changing the icon for Finder.app & Trash icon is not as simple but do-able. If anyone wants to know. I will list the steps.

But changing the Apple logo in the Apple menu Omg no way. The only viable thing i saw in forums in Geektools.

To add upon Get Info and Icons, you can use common keyboard shortcuts there to avoid having to drag things around. This is especially useful if you want to revert back to the original icon, because you can Cut (Cmd+X) the changes made after highlighting the current icon in the window to revert back to the original.

Cmd+C and Cmd+V can be used from window to window to copy/paste them as well.

Can you please provide me the black trash can icon? Btw, I purchased Flavours 2 today. Wow, so many themes to choose from. I can't use the Brushed theme though because doesn't work on my non-retina MBP. I can't read the URL bar in Safari. Otherwise, I'm quite happy with Flavours 2.
