... Apple releases slightly bumped MBPs with faster processors. So they are 2.33 and 2.66 now. But the main thing is they've swopped the LCD backlighting to LEDs and used a higher quality panel.

Would that be enough to motivate you to upgrade?
 
I'd need a new case. The MBP has a lovely case, don't get me wrong, but the design of the new MacBooks has aged it IMHO. Plus they need to release a model that's smaller than 15" :(

An OLED screen would be nice of course. Throw in better graphics and I'd be tempted. As this is a pro machine they really need to look to integrated EV-DO and/or 3G HSDPA as other manufacturers are, though (Dell, Sony etc). There's quite a few more things than just the screen to catch up on.

This is so true it feels somewhat sad :(

I have a good feeling that this recent upgrade is really just a half arsed effort to drum up Christmas sales and the real goodies are coming in MWSF. At least I hope so.

This display is giving me headaches in comparison with the NEC 2180UX I use normally at my desk. That screen is old technology, 2 years old, yet its colour saturation and viewing angles are worlds away from this laptop's.

Not really. LED backlighting would be great but so far I'm yet to see an LED-backlit LCD that is less than 7cm thick and man are they expensive. Nor are there C2D processors faster than 2.33GHz.

But I presume this is all purely hypothetical in which case, Yes, I would be tempted to upgrade.

EDIT - Oh, so you're putting in a "from current/previous MBPs proviso into this. Because any of the current machines are a temptation over my ageing iBook.

Isn't it true that there will soon be 2.66Ghz C2D chips?
 
I will prob upgrade sometime in 2008. My current MBP, if I ever get it back from Applecare, should be good enough for the foreseeable future. That and I think I'm going to have serious reservations going with another Apple laptop. I've gone through 4 laptops prior to my MBP and only my first laptop (Compaq Presario.) has been in for repairs more times. (Eight) My two Thinkpads and my Tosh satellite...flawless. We'll see.

That is why I am upgrading right now. I waited for 2 months for them to be updated and I'm not waiting any longer. The bumps the OP suggested are not reason enough to wait or upgrade to from what the MBPs currently are in my opinion, not when I need to do some massive AutoCad and Sketchup projects and all I have is an iBook. It would have to be a pretty major upgrade for me to want to sell a 1.5 month old laptop to get the latest one out. Not happening.
 
Does new LED technology prolong the longevity of screen? The regular LCD backlight's half-life is about 3 years (ie. full brightness = 1.5 years). I prefer the screen lasts as long as the life of the notebook.

umm you got the speed wrong .. its now 2.16Ghz on base model and 2.33Ghz on mid range 15"/17"


the 2.66Ghz is Mid-range on the Mac Pro :eek: :eek:
 
I still love my 15" PB.

Think it will be several years before I feel a real need to upgrade.

What makes you say that? My 15" 2.33GHz Core2 MacBook Pro seems better in almost every aspect over my 1.67GHz 17" Powerbook.

The only thing I don't like is that it takes forever to go to sleep - a good 15-20 seconds after closing the lid, rather than being instant. Waking etc is fine though.

EDIT: Oh, and LED backlighting would be nice if it's done right, but the ones in current laptops were rather poor when calibrated: http://www.behardware.com/articles/...neration-of-monitors-extended-gammut-led.html

I'm very happy with the LCD on my MacBook Pro, I just wish the viewing angles were better.

Yeap, the viewing angles are heinous.

It seems like with the x86 chips these newer machines are plagued with problems. The early Macbook Pros from the look of things were absolutely hell to own, and these C2D ones, while much better... just have that horrible display.

Doesn't Apple do any user testing at all? Considering their market (graphics and creative types) there is no way that a TN LCD panel will be unnoticed.

A honest question... are all laptops today still having displays with such narrow viewing angles? The last laptop I bought was from almost 2 years ago so I'm rather disappointed that in 2 years virtually no advancement has been made in laptop LCDs.
 
We all know what's coming at MWSF, and MBP updates won't be anywhere near the agenda.

This poll is about as useful as asking, "If in the distant future, Apple releases a laptop with faster processors and better monitor technology, would you upgrade?"
