Level screen fix?

So I know a number of us have screens on their iPhones that are not flush and/or have dust under them. I was wondering if anyone has done a replacement manually of their screen or front of their phone and if this allowed them to solve this issue. There are guides on how to remove the front of the phone on iFixit, but I'd rather not take it apart unless I know I'll be able to do what I want to do.

...why risk taking it apart yourself and voiding your warranty. If it is unlevel, just wait to get some dust behind it and take it to apple and get a replacement.

It's had dust behind it since a few days after I bought it. I got it July 11th, on release day. They'll still replace it? I think I'm still under warranty but I'm pretty sure they'll consider it something post manufacture. Like it's my fault for getting it dusty or that I dropped it or something. Worth a try though I guess.

But anyways, anyone try a DIY? I'd probably wait 'till my warranty runs out before trying anyways.

It was said before and I don't know if you still don't get it but why risk voiding you warranty? All Apple hardware comes with a one year warranty. This does not cover physical damage from the user, however. This should be covered and Apple should give you a new iPhone. You can also purchase another 2 year warranty called AppleCare which extends your warranty 2 years from the purchase date.

No, I got it. You didn't get what I said then.

I was asking if it would still be covered if my phone is from July? Or will they blame the dust on me? That's what I'm asking.

I also realize that it would void my warranty, I'd have no qualms doing it post warranty though, as there would be nothing to void. I would never buy the extended warranty because if it's a product worth 200 bucks to begin with it damn well better last 2 years anyways! If not, it's my last iPhone. Now, if Applecare covered accidental damage, I'd get it in a heart beat. It's like giving them more money to make sure they didn't screw you over. Doesn't make sense. I got it with my laptop because it's meant to last much longer than a few years and can have a few kinks to work out.

So now that I've established that I don't care about extending my warranty, I don't care if I open it past the warranty date, I will try to get it fixed by Apple for free if someone can tell me if they'd let me for sure, can someone answer my question? I recently popped out the screen to clean the dust out. Worked out great. I recommend a suction cup instead of a case opener tool to get the screen out. I even vacuumed out the screenless phone with a brush attachment to clean it out and prevent dust from getting back in for awhile.

Can apple really tell if the phone has been disassembled? Visually there'd be no way to tell but I know they plug something in before handing over a refurb.

Cool thanks! So you just took it out by pulling it straight up? Did you have to disassemble anything? No screws or anything? Take of the bezel?

There are only 8 screws involved and 6 are around the screen so it's pretty easy. The bezel never gets moved. Once you remove the two screws by the dock connector use a suction cup around the home button and wiggle out gently. There are 3 cables to disconnect at the top of the screen labeled 1-3. Remove in that order. Definitely watch a YouTube by pdaparts.com to see what's involved.

If you've ever put on a static screen protector then you know how difficult it might be to get all the dust out. May take a few tries but at least you don't have to put the phone back together to see. Just snap the lcd and glass together and check for dust before reassembly.

Sorry dude, I didn't mean to come off the the wrong way. I was just trying to state my opinion. So sorry if I came off harsh.

Well, I don't see how the dust could be your fault if your device shows no signs of being opened. I have opened up many iPhones before and it is quite a job. You have to be sure not to lose and parts, take your time, be extremely careful, and know what your doing. I watched the PDAParts disassembly video about 20 times, literally. I have never heard of using a suction cup to remove the screen but it better be pretty strong because the glue is really hard. On the iPhone 3G, I think Apple used screws to attach the display and touch panel. I'm not sure about the glass though.

I was talking about the 3g only. I don't like prying with case opener tools so a suction cup will take out the screen once the 2 screws are removed. There's no glue involved unless you are swapping out the digitizer from the plastic frame. I was refrencing taking out the screen as an assembly with the LCD.
