Hi all, I'm wondering if there's any possible way to adapt a T3 cable into an HDMI 2.1 port that ships with the new MacBook Pro's? I use an LG 5K Ultrafine but would love to free up a Thunderbolt port on the laptop if possible. I'm guessing this isn't technically possible, but thought it was worth asking :)

I don’t know of a way. Doesn’t mean it’s 100% “Impossible” - but my guess is that it is.

From a usability point of view, even if someone figured out a way to do it - it would eliminate using the Ultrafine to power the Mac, and it would eliminate the USB-C hub on the Ultrafine.

Thanks, I'm using it to power an i9 16" MacBook Pro, but the new 16" M2 Max draws 140w, so the LG 5K won't be able to power it anyway :( And the newer laptops have dedicated MagSafe charging, so I wouldn't need to power it through the monitor anyway :)

If it works, the HDMI 2.1 port could only do 5K at 39Hz to the LG UltraFine 5K. That was a limit that someone achieved using DisplayPort. You would need to use a HDMI 2.1 to USB-C or DisplayPort adapter since earlier HDMI 2.0 to DisplayPort adapters can't do more than 4K width. You would need a USB connection to support the USB features of the LG UltraFine 5K display, such as audio, camera, and brightness control.

You better stick with using a Thunderbolt port.

You could use a Thunderbolt 4 hub to add more Thunderbolt ports.

True and although the magsafe port adds a unique charging experience it does prevent the ultra clean 1 cable setup a lot of people like.

It powers my 16” MBP with no problems. 140W isn’t necessary unless the Mac is running full-tilt for a long time.
