Google have never taken their hardware program seriously enough. The Pixel 3, 4 were pretty good but then the 5 was like...what?

It is certainly unfortunate but I just do not see how anyone competes against Samsung, Huawei and Xiaomi.

The only way to compete is with huge marketing budget and if you aren't a company that is comfortable with that you aren't going to get any traction.

LG should just stick to what they do best making TV's & screen's for other manufacturers, some of their phone's in the past have been terrible, unreliable & software support was also been shocking.

Tbh Google doesn't need a phone their software presence is everywhere, they could easily sit back and watch the billions roll in from ads.

If anything Google really need to scrap the Pixel line and go back to the more niche Nexus line, one phone a year with decent spec's not necessarily flagship, Stock Android, and price under $500.

Ugh, that's kind of, I don't know, disappointing. Not that I've been using LG (besides a nexus device). Heck I've barely used an HTC device. This really is not good, things seem to be slowly consolidating into just Samsung android and Apple iPhones. Well I guess that'd probably solve the android fragmentation issue ?

Still wouldn't be surprised to see Samsung dump android for their own ecosystem. Google would keep their hand in android enough to continue to harvest data and sell ads.

Probably wouldn't take much for Google to just walk away from hardware. Android seems to get more locked down after each iteration. Handset makers keep walking away.

Ugh, as a non Apple user if my choices where just Samsung and Apple, ugh, touch call. Might side with Apple ?

[LG’s] software support was also been shocking.
I think this is another issue that has plagued Android hardware O.E.M.’s. You can build a Windows computer and have minimum driver support, or build a washing machine or T.V. with no firmware support. But a smartphone requires constant firmware support throughout its life. I don’t think a lot of companies can do that. It means you are spending money on a product long after you have sold it.

I’ve never really like LG smartphones. I did try the LG G3 but I only lasted a few days and then I returned it and got the S5. However it is a shame another one of the older android OEMs are fading away just like HTC.

Yeah I swore I was going to get 3rd degree burns from holding the G3. That's how hot it would get.

Agreed though. HTC was fun. And in fairness to LG, the Optimus V was my first ever smartphone and I loved it.

LG had decent phones, and was willing to take risks (modular phones, first with ultra wide angle lens second camera, dual screen, etc). They also gave Google Nexus some memorable phones (Nexus 4, 5)

But they got beaten in marketing by Samsung, and got beaten in the emerging markets by the Chinese. They cannot sell high nor low.

My favorite LG phone was the V20.

loved the g2

Their quarterly reports came out and it says they lost 750 million mostly on the mobile department. I think they know it's a wrap.

Shame because the wing has potential but people are sheep and phones can only do so much.

Did you buy the wing to support LG? Just because something doesn't succeed, doesn't mean everybody else are sheep.

NO I'm on a cheap prepaid plan I wouldn't switch to Verizon for that phone.

Exactly. I have absolutely zero interest in the Wing. I've had the G3, the G4, and the Flex. I've given LG a chance in the past, and at one point they were a contender. Over time they just fell further and further behind to the point they were no longer a consideration for me. What he calls being a sheep, I call not settling. The LG Wing is not the least bit appealing to me, and neither is anything else in LG's current offering. They simply don't stack up anymore.

Welp, there goes my hopes for a WebOS LG phone. I miss WebOS. Would have been neat to see them port it to an LG phone and not just confine it to TVs.

As someone who switched to LG devices after I decided to leave iPhone this news sucks.

I've had the:

LG G5
V30
V40
V50
and now the V60

Each one has been a very solid phone that just works. Never had any issues or anything with any of them. RIP

This only means less competition which leads to more stagnation. Competition inspires innovation. Now we're left with what now? Two mobile OSs? Android or iOS? Now it's Samsung, Pixel, and Apple in the U.S.?

I miss the days of WebOS, Windows Phone, Symbian, Android, Blackberries, Nokias, HTCs, LGs, Motos, Apple, etc. Things were certainly a lot more interesting and far more variety existed in 2010-11. 2020-21 is such a homogenized, stagnating flat UI mess.

They were the first to come out with ultra wide lens. Thanks for that LG!!! Also supported high quality headphone output longer than others. They should've focused on the hardware and used stock android

I just went to a Best Buy (ours just opened up recently) and noticed a long swath of new Nokia Android-based phones for decent prices (The Nokia 7.1). With LG done, at least there's some decent stuff to take its place. Not planning on buying any but at least there's still some variety left.

Just wish phones had more to offer other than flat UIs, multiple cameras, and huge displays. I want someone out there who isn't afraid to challenge the status quo.

Perhaps Nokia and Sony will be able to make more inroads.

It seems you have to have a very huge marketing budget to compete in the Android phone arena.

Marketing is not the only factor as Xiaomi did very little marketing compared to Samsung or Oppo, yet they managed to climb that ladder. Nokia and Sony are no longer competitive. The ship has sailed now.

LG Android phones suck, I had the G2, G6, the classic V30 and V40, and every one of them was amazing at launch really cool phones, then all got like old Windows 95 PC's becoming slower, laggy, and bloated. I ended up hating each phone after like 9 months to a year later. Plus I was surprised how poor LG supported them, their updates were pretty pathetic.

Still Nexus / Pixel phones are Android. yeah Google blows on the hardware front, but they make the best OS, and UI, it's the way Android is meant to be, not bloated or Lagwiz. Google just needs to frigging get serious already and build a iPhone 12 Pro caliber quality phone already, Google can do it, if they really wanted and tried.

Really surprised google didn't make a play for LG or even HTC for that matter. Probably could have gotten some really good stuff for their pixels.

Really hoping it just doesn't come down to Apple or Samsung :(

Personally, I find Google's UI hideous, iOS 7 2.0 looking. I prefer Android being different and having device identity, and I don't really care about updates since I never like the changes. So those were never any real factor in avoiding or steering towards Android. I also adored TouchWiz Nature UX, as it fit me perfectly (skeuo and nature themed, two things I love) and One UI just looks boring, flat, and kiddy colored.

What always brought me back to Apple is the smoothness and speed. Even now, my 6 year old 6S is lightning fast compared to my one-year older Galaxy S5, despite neither having any updates installed (disabled)
