Dear technological gurus,

I just came into possession of two shiny new LG Ultrafine 4k displays, which proudly assert their USB-C credentials. And I dunno, but they just don't do nuffink when I plug 'em into my Mac Pro with USB-C.

I'm running a Mac Pro 2019 on Sequoia, and I have an AMD Radeon RX6900 installed, which runs natively. Granted, the Radeon doesn't have USB-C outputs; it only has HDMI and Displayport outputs, but I (naively?) assumed I would be able to use any of the USB-C thunderbolt ports on the Mac. That's what Apple seems to suggest on its advice pages. I've tried multiple cables, including the supplied ones, and none register a connection with the Mac (they all seemingly supply power to the monitors, which briefly spring to life & then tell me there's no connection).

I'm connecting via HDMI, so this is not the end of the world, but it would be handy to use the USB hub functionality on the monitors & my why-oh-why-oh-why button is just being scratched to the point of near insanity. Would anyone like to guess what might be going on on the USB-C front?

“To use the Thunderbolt 3 ports on the top and back of your Mac Pro to connect displays, you must have at least one Radeon Pro MPX Module installed. If a Radeon Pro MPX Module isn't installed, the Thunderbolt 3 ports on your Mac Pro are used only for data and power.” - from this article

Well done you, thank you ! So now I’m wondering if I plug the stock MPX unit back in, will I glitch the gpu computational access to my RX 6900….

You could buy two Wacom Link Plus adapters which take DisplayPort and USB inputs and provide one USB-C with DisplayPort Alternate Mode output each.
