LG WH16NS40 Blu-Ray Drive Sleep Issues

I've been running a LG WH16NS40 Blu-ray drive installed internally on my 5,1 for about 2 months now.

And while it works great reading and burning discs, there are some incompatibility issues with system sleep that drives me nuts.

The optical drive will disappear when the Mac Pro sleeps. (Currently running El Capitan). Some users on the internet suggest disabling "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" in energy settings but the issue still occurs.

A shut down of the Mac down and then a reboot is required for the drive to reappear.

There is no firmware update for the drive that I'm aware of since Mac support is non existent. (I'm also speculating that it causes some program and finder crashing when it looks for a drive that doesn't wake up.)

I went ahead today and reinstalled the original superdrive and I will run this drive externally.

I have an external eSata hard drive dock, so I just need to get an SATA data+power cable and extension to run this thing as a bare drive.

Anyone has experiences with third party optical drives on their Mac Pro?

Edit: The 2nd optical drive bay is occupied with an auxiliary power supply so I can't install the drive there either.

I have installed a lot of these LG 14x and 16x Blu-Ray drives in cMPs and have not noticed any serious issues with them with OS X Snow to Yosemite . Sometimes , they don't like to eject properly . I don't have experience with them installed in El Capitan Systems as it is too new for me to use with my retail Builds . Therefore, I suspect your issue is OS related .

I have LG WH12LS30, the older 12x version of these drives. Works well. Doesn't disappear after sleep that I've noticed, but granted I don't use it very often these days.

If you have a spare hard drive, I'd suggest putting a fresh install of OS X on it temporarily and seeing the problem happens on a fresh install. That would eliminate the problem from being any custom software, drivers, settings, etc that you might have changed over the years.

I've had one in my 06 for 2 years no issues currently running Yosemite.

Ever since I've removed the LG Bluray drive and replaced it with the original factory drive, I haven't experienced the issue. I'm just going to mount the LG in an external enclosure and call it a day. A less elegant solution, but the finder "crashing" when the optical drive didn't wake was unacceptable.
