I am putting together a new build. It has been probably 7 or 8 years since the last PC I built. That machine has been solid and have not had to do anything to it, just keeps running. I want to do a new clean build from scratch and in looking at CPU's and motherboards I see a newer chipset LGA1851. Am I right in assuming this is what all the new chips will be moving to? I don't follow all the sockets and what I had originally priced out was an LGA 1700. When I saw this newer one it had me question if it would make sense to go for the 1851 assuming that is a little more future proof and possibly the 1700 at some point in the near future being discontinued?

LGA1851 is largely dead. Intel's Nova Lake chip will be using LGA1954 in 2026.

Can I ask why you're considering Intel, when AMD has superior processors, and AM5 will be supported longer.

glad I asked! I thought it was a newer chipset. So latest to use now is 1700. I am just more familiar with Intel and have had good experiences with it, so basically was going with what I know.

The build I am going (open for change if it makes sense to me) is:

CPU - was looking at an i7 12700KF
Motherboard - Tuf Gaming Z790-BTF - https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0D3D3BKRN...IAPD7GMWO&ref_=list_c_wl_lv_ov_lig_dp_it&th=1
- I like the connectors on the back, the case I have has a separate compartment for this so a lot less clutter. and easy setup.

GPU - will be a 5070ti, not sure which exact one yet
RAM - will be going with 32gigs
Liquid Cooling - Corsair iCue Link Titan 360 RX https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0DF79SWMJ...IAPD7GMWO&ref_=list_c_wl_lv_ov_lig_dp_it&th=1

Fully modular PSU - 1000w or around there

I already have the case.

I have been talking with ChatGPT about this, exploring the AMD option. It suggested the Ryzen 7 7800x3d as a great gaming CPU. A bit more then what I was planning on going with but not that far out of range and willing to spend it if it is indeed a good performer for what I want.

Ultimately looking for a good solid performer for Star Citizen. Want great graphics and to experience this game smoothly. My current 2070 gpu and older i7 just struggle through it now making it a pain and for me unplayable because of the lag.

Take a look at the AMD 7700 cpu, yeah its not the gaming powerhouse that the 7800x3d but will be a good option to consider

I don't really have to compromise on the CPU, I had just planned around that much. I want the games I want to play to look really good and play really well. Or is the 7700 better bank for your buck in that I will not notice a huge difference compared to the 7800? And are these all going to be significantly better then an i7 that I had listed? CPU's are around the same price for the 7800, actually about $40 to $50 more

I can't really say what would work best, I've not done a lot of due diligence. If it were me, I'd go with towards the 7700 as it offers good all around performance but if the price difference isn't terribly different then the 7800x3d, then that obviously makes more sense - more so if you're building a gaming rig.

I'd recommend various review sites, like gamer nexus, jays2cents, they'll provide benchmarks, the good/bad/ugly with each cpu and why one may be a better buy over another.

As much as I love my intel build, if I was doing a pc build right now and want it more future proof, amd is the much better choice. Intels in a weird in between stage for their sockets and AMD is definitely on top for gaming

Do you happen to have a microcenter near you? They usually have some great bundle deals.

As far as the 12700kf vs A ryzen 7800x3d or newer 9800x3d. Both those are vastly better gaming cpu's than the intel. Even a regular 7700 chip will perform better. Intel has more cores, but keep in mind, a chunk of that core count is taken up with lower power E-cores. Gaming, AMD is definitely on top. And this is coming from a 13700kf owner lol.

I've been an Intel fanboy for years, but its downright impossible to recommend them in 2025.
  • They're in a desperate financial position and their survival is not gaurenteed.
  • Some reviewers mentioned that the 14th gen is slower then the 13th gen (or not noticeably faster)
  • They chose to sit on their laurels for an entire decade not innovating but instead chose to milk the consumers
  • Issues with the 13th and 14th gen CPUs that defective microcode caused the cpus to be damaged during normal operations
  • For similar money you get an amd processor that is generally faster and cooler then what Intel has been provding.

After a bunch of research over the weekend I have decided to go ahead with the AMY 7 - 78003dx

What I am putting together is:
  • Corsair 6500 Series Case
  • MSI RTX 5070 Ti 16G Shadow 3X OC
  • AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
  • ASUS TUF Gaming B850-BTF WiFi (ATX)
  • CORSAIR iCUE Link Titan 360 RX LCD Liquid CPU Cooler
  • Patriot Viper Venom DDR5 32GB (2×16GB) 6000MHz
  • WD_BLACK 1TB SN770 NVMe (Gen4, M.2 2280, up to 5,150 MB/s)
  • CORSAIR RMe Series RM850e Fully Modular Low-Noise ATX Power Supply (Black)

Hoping to buy this all next week after a bit more researching and making sure I have everything I need and not missing anything.
