My current tacky solution is to have all my MP3s on one computer and all my lossless files on another.

Option-click on iTunes in the Dock to launch app. A dialog box will open to allow you to create a new library or open an existing one. Another way is to combine them all into one library and use Smart Playlists to separate your lossless from your compressed songs.
