On my MacBook if I close the lid, after a short while when I open the lid, it has already logged me out. But Apple->Sleep works fine.

if you plup an external USB mouse after you close the lid, i believe your machine will wake up even without external display.
I've played with it a few times and it seems to actually sleep. If I open it up before ~30 min it is still logged in. But after that it logs me out. Is there a setting anywhere for logging timeouts?
I'd hate to reinstall the OS as I have my iTunes Music and I've never backed it up. I'm not sure how to back it up and successfully restore it. So I'd rather not risk losing it since I paid for the music.
On the Security tab of System Preferences there is an option to log out after x minutes of activity. Not sure if this is your problem but worth checking. Do you have any apps open or anything plugged in when you close the lid? When the machine wakes it should be int he same state it was at the moment of sleep.
Well I backed up my iTunes and iPhotos and did an "Erase and Install". Hopefully that will help. Plus things are faster now.
Well it is still doing it. Along with my iSight now not functioning (even after doing all diagnostics per Apple's website), this is the second thing not working. I'm a little bummed about it but sometimes you get a machine that doesn't work right all the time.
I'm going to the Apple Store tomorrow and see if a genius can look at it and get it fixed. Hopefully I won't be without my

too long.So I took the MacBook to the Apple Store today. The first thing the Genius did was attempt to boot from an external firewire drive. Interestingly the drive wasn't being detected. So she tried another drive, then another. I told her that I haven't used the firewire since I've gotten it so I cannot verify that it works. I also said that I use an external trackball and external USB HD so I know the USB ports works. So she tries an external USB drive. It isn't detected.
So now the techs are going to run further diagnostics to see if
a) a repair is necessary, fix it in store
b) a repair is necessary, ship it out for repair
Hopefully it won't be too long. I miss it already.

Forgot to update this. Got it back after a week with iSight functioning. The uptime was ~8 days, using sleep exclusively, when it hung after waking.
Then I used the Deep Sleep widget and after waking from hibernate, I got an error that told me to hold down power to force off. OS X reported an error on reboot and I sent it in.
