What's the ballpark lifespan for these new SSD in terms of permitted writes per cell?

Does it support wear lvl mechanism? (in other words, does it SPREAD the writes all across the cells to prevent quick deterioration?)

Any data would be great...thanks.

well, considering the new MBA just came out last month, your guess on lifespan is anybody else's. i do however agree with the poster who basically said Apple wouldn't make and release a product that had a short life span. they've never done so in the past, i doubt they are starting now.

This is OT, but do you have the new 13-inch Air?

yep, ordered it the day it came out. had it since Oct. 24th. i've also had an ssd boot drive in my mac pro since feb this year and have noticed no slow downs or performance issues -- it's all kinds of snappy.

I'm guessing it'll last at least 5 years or so with fair use...And of course it'll be enough until I swap out for new computer...but that's not the point..I just wanted to know some detailed specs beyond what avg joe would know..

it's funny because we have no data on this device and just have to trust apple for it...

This guy got 90 million writes out of a flash drive, I am assuming SSDs are similar.

http://www.bress.net/blog/archives/114-How-Long-Does-a-Flash-Drive-Last.html

Upon some research..it seems like HIGH-END Intel SSDs have avg lifespan of about 20GB writes per day for at least 5 years.

Now I know SSD that Apple uses isn't Intel and I doubt they are "high-end"...

So if you cut that in half...it's still about 10GB writes per day for 5 years...pretty good but not permanent as most people think. It's certainly more reliable than HDD, of course..

Like any new technology ... this could be a wait and see approach from Apple.

As SSDs become cheaper and longer lasting ... Apple will deal with the outcome when they have to cross that bridge.

WOW. The Air just came out ffs, how can we know what's the life span of the flash drives?! Give it a couple of years. Plus, apple care takes care of it for 3 years, and 5 years for parts. So back up your data as you would normally do, and enjoy.

SSD BTW fail in "binary" Which means they either work or they don't. Mechanical HD's will sometimes give you warning noises they're about to die, you can also sometimes get the good data off before the the whole things crashes. As I've owned SSD's since 2008, I've had several SSD failures and they usually happen in the first 90 days.
