Got offered a 2011 iMac with a fault. It "suddenly" (writes the seller) develope a light gap at the left side of the screen. (See picture.)

Any idea what it can be and if it is an easy repair? Unfortunately I can not see it in the flesh, only from pictures.
Is this a typical fault for this model?

Don't bother with this one. Buy it, and you're asking for trouble.
The 2011's are notable for bad internal GPU's ... hence, the display problems.

Buy something else.

I have the model with 512 MB GPU (radeon 6770M). The one on sale has the 1 GB GPU (radeon 6970M).
I also tought it can come for the unreliable GPU, but don't know if a faulty one manifest itself like this.

From the picture you post, I guess it's the LCD panel that is faulty. Better avoid this item, unless you buy it just to get parts.

The seller couldn't send you a close-up of the light gap? It looks almost like someone has moved a window all the way to the left so only the rightmost few pixels show.

Seller wrote that sometimes the gap dissapear. So it is clearly the GPU. I will pass on this.
