Just a message to anyone that was wondering if Apple store will swap their iphones over due to light leak.

My iphone had pretty bad light leak and the guy at the genius bar told me they're all like that, i said bull, my girlfriends and 3 out of the 4 display models i checked did not have the problem so he swapped it.

The next one had much less but dust got under the screen and even an eyelash. Took it back, no arguments, straight swap.

Third one i have now has an excellent seal all the way around and Zero light leak. So if your bothered, go to the Apple store and swap it, if the next one has it swap it.

For me it wasn;t cosmetic, dust was getting under the screen after a few days so i can imagine a year down the road it may of caused problems with it being a touch screen.

How big were your light leaks? Mine has a small one on both sides, (about 3-4mm each) but I have yet to see any dust behind the glass. The phone is great otherwise, so I'm hesitant to replace it with another one

Can you tell by the serial # when it was built?

I just exchanged my 3G this weekend and it still has a slight light leak. It is the latest build, IIRC.

I don't care about the light leak so much--as long as my "other" issues are gone.

I don't think serial numbers (week of build) has much to do with it.

Here is why, the display models, i went into menus to see week of build and the 1 from the 4 i tested that had a light leak was week 28 and the ones without it were 27.

My main worry was condensation build up under the screen. I had a Panasponic mobile a couple of years back and there was tiny light leak. The phone stopped working after a few months, when i sent it in for repair they said it was condensation build up that can happen even when in sitting in a car, he said the windows steam up and the phone does the same when the screen is not sealed right. They blamed it on me and said i needed to pay and that if the screen wasn;t sealed i should of said.

When i got the iphone i have now i got the guy behind the genius bar to agree that if we open one and it has light leak i can keep swapping it there and then till i find one without a manufacturer defect.
