Is anyone else at least a little confused why the newest Apple iPads have lightning ports instead of USB-C ports?

All the new toys I've bought recently have USB-C -- cameras, laptops, etc. including of course the iPad Pro. I guess my newest phone still have lightning.

Not at all. The Air and the Mini 5 are recasts of older models with minimal engineering changes. That’s also why they still have TouchID and headphone jacks.

With the iPhone, I have to wonder if they’re holding onto Lightning until they can ditch the port altogether.

Apple is still milking the lightening port cow on the iPhone, so its no surprise that the non "pro" iPads still use that. Maybe this fall we'll see apple transition move models over USB-C
