Downloading as I type this. I'm pretty excited. I had resisted the temptation to try out Beta 2 until last week... big mistake, the much improved noise reduction and the native tethered shooting both won me over.

EDIT: downloaded. Automatic lens correction is super cool. Easily worth the upgrade price.

Unfortunately none of my lenses are supported out of the box, and I haven't created any profiles yet.

It's unfortunate that they haven't given access to the user-created lens profile index that (apparently) can be accessed if you have CS5.

Crap, I just ordered a Drobo with 5 1 Terabyte disks, another 4 gigs of ram, and a new hard disk for my MBP. What are the odds that my wife will understand my need to upgrade fro the beta?

Yep, saw it last night. I have the Beta 2 version now. I'll download the official trial tonight and "acquire" it soon.

If there is anything that pleases me more, it's this comment:

"There have been over 600,000 downloads of the Lightroom 3 public beta, which has supplied us with a huge amount of valuable feedback from a passionate community of professional and advanced amateur photographers," said Kevin Connor, vice president of product management for Digital Imaging at Adobe. "The open dialog we have with our customers allows us to further improve Lightroom and provide the best tools they need to produce high-quality images. We're happy to see that so many people are anxiously anticipating the final release, so they can start taking advantage of all the new features they had a hand in developing."

**n00b question**

As I've never used it, I noticed that it's "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3" , does this mean that it runs seperate or inside of PS?

Excuse my ignorance.. :/

It's completely stand alone. You can send pics from Lightroom to Photoshop for editing and then the edited version is returned to lightroom but Lightroom is separate from PS.

It's just considered part of the Photoshop 'family'.

Well, since you're using the beta, you're already committed. She wouldn't want you not to honour your commitments! :)

Oh, she will want me to honor my commitment... It is just when can I scrap together the cash... Then again my daughters can use their educational discount... That means $89 for LR3 and $299 for Photoshop CS5 Extended...

Gee, I just upgraded both of their hardrives, and added memory to their machines. Maybe they will do something nice for their old man:)

I'm using it right now. Wow, sooooo much better than Aperture. Everything EVERYTHING is easy to use. And it's FAST, applying adjustments are light-speed beyond Aperture 3. The adjustments are far more diverse than what Aperture offers. I only dread the pain and suffering of transferring 5,000 images from Aperture to LR3. That and $99.

I prefer Aperture. This, after switching back and forth between them after every upgrade cycle, I've decided I like Aperture more because the biggest selling point is the books feature. Lightroom is good, but I hate the mickey mouse toy interface. It is actually harder to use than Aperture, which just feels more professional.

Where am I???
Just edited my first session with the full LR3, having used the beta on and off for the last few months.

Wow!!!, is all I can say.

A few points:

1. The new rendering engine is terrific. One of the big knocks against LR in the past has been that Adobe's RAW rendering was not super accurate. Well, the new engine seems to be a lot closer to what I would call "accurate"; nothing scientific at this point, but it seems really nice, though it does take a bit longer to render previews.

2. Noise reduction is unreal. Seriously, this is as good as I need, and I don't anticipate having to bring out Noiseware anymore.

3. Overall speed (with the exception of RAW rendering using the new engine) is MUCH better than v2.7 on my Penryn MBP.

4. Grain simulation is a nice touch, and works beautifully with many of the Presetopia presets I use.

5. Built-in lens correction. Wow!

6. Sharpening seems to be much nicer too; not sure how to describe it, but I seem to be able to get more aggressive with sharpening without causing as many nasties.

With the new watermarking tools, the improved sharpening, and the incredible noise reduction, I'm sure that my need for Photoshop will become next to zero; the only thing I will need PS for is layer masking, and I already did less of that since adjustment brushes were introduced in v2.0.

LR3 is a seriously awesome program!

Edge - have you played at all with the Lens Profiles?

A little bit.

The shoot I just processed was all done with the 70-200 and a 50, so not much in the way of either CA or distortion. But I did go back and look at some images I shot with the 17-40 @ 17mm, as well as some shots of buildings, and the ability to correct barrel distortion and perspective distortion is really remarkable; something I would have had to go into PS to do in the past can now be done right in LR, and that makes me smile. That was a GREAT addition to the final version.

I just my SN emailed to me from Adobe - I'll be in LR bliss soon.
