Hi,

Just moved Lightroom 4 from a rmbp 13" to 15". when I am viewing the photos from lightroom (not editing, just going thru the library), the cpu usage intensifies and eventually the FAN starts to spin. And it all happens with in minutes. I don't recall it happened on the 13" which had an i5.

Normal? i7 is that much hotter?

I own an early 2013 model of the rmbp, and a photographer as a job for a living relying on apps like you stated, day in and day out, Ivy Bridge i7 GT650m, based from my own experience, the rmbp does not use the discrete graphics card when using LR alone (check with gfxCardStatus app). (viewing with RAW 36mpx Nikon D800 photos)

Assumption:
Maybe you have Adobe Photoshop open alongside Lightroom which makes the fan spin louder which also uses the discrete graphic card,
Photoshop is more cpu and gpu demanding.

Hi, you are right. LR does not use the discrete graphic card (you actually can see it in the activity monitor -> Energy -> Requires High Perf GPU). The CPU usage/Fan speed do not go up when I am actually doing the editing. It happens when I browse the photo library really fast (when I do the pick/deny going through hundreds photos). I guess LR was doing a lot of work to generate the previews. All 4 cpus (LR doesn't use hyper threading either apparently) go way up.

My only explanation is the large folder I was browsing was newly to the LR so no previews were ever generated? Or I might have to delete and reinstall the LR since this is restored from a Time Machine backup.
