Lightroom > iCloud Photo Library

I would like to know if anyone has a good workflow for transferring photos from Lightroom to the icloud photo library.

My current Lightroom library is approximately 135Gb and is stored on an external hard drive as my MacBook Pro only has a 128Gb SSD. I would ultimately like to use my icloud photo library to backup and access all of my photos from any of my devices but have not been able to find a way to upload easily. I could import my Lightroom library into OSX photo with storage optimization turned on but I do not have the spare space to temporarily stored the photos on my MacBook Pro SSD while the upload. I have also read that if you have your OSX photo library stored on an external drive, the app will not sync your photos with your icloud photo library, does anyone know if you can manually sync the photos as long as you have your external hard drive plugged in.

My only other option was to use my old laptop to upload images to the icloud photo library using the website.

There must be an easier way of doing this, hopefully someone has a good work around..
 
There is no direct conduit to iCloud from Lightroom. Its a competing product, and there's no hooks into Apple's cloud services. You'll really need to start using Apple's apps to embrace apple's cloud. Have you thought about using what Adobe offers (cloud wise) since you're nearly there anyways with LR?
 
I don't really expect to have an upload feature within Lightroom but it just seems very difficult to get my photos into my iCloud Photo Library. The simplest solution I could think of is if Apple allowed your OSX library to be stored on an external hard drive and still have the ability to sync to the iCloud Photo Library while ever the device is plugged in. It seems like there shouldn't be any reason that this couldn't happen especially when Apple are selling more devices with smaller capacity SSDs, they should expect people to be storing their libraries externally.

Even if I could have more control over my 'optimize storage' I could limit the amount of space I take up with photos while they are being uploaded.
 
You can keep your Apple Photos library on an external drive and still sync it with iCloud Photo Library. I do that. No need to keep it on the SSD.
 
Does it automatically sync or do you need to manually sync when the drive is plugged in
