What do you mean, why can't you just throw it into an external enclosure like Lacie does and connect it via USB or Firewire?
 
That exact drive in an external FireWire case works perfectly for me on my aging G4/Dual 450 (upgraded to be a dual 1.0).

I used a peecee I had lying around to update the firmware - you have to connect to the peecee via USB or by internal ATA - then installed it on my Mac.

The kext you need is available here:
