I hear you can legally buy an unlocked iPhone in Italy. Well, I guess the first question is... is this true?

Beyond that, I am wondering if there are limitations with doing this and then using the phone back in the US under AT&T, or traveling abroad elsewhere. Do I still get all the system updates? Will AT&T MMS work and will it download all appropriate carrier settings when the AT&T SIM is in? Will visual voicemail work?

I've been considering doing this, and would just like to know the caveats.

It's an unlocked phone. You pay a few hundred dollars more for it but it can accept any SIM. The iPhone functions just as every over iPhone on top of this fact. :)
