Line in Doesn't Work

Hello, I have a 2 month old MBP C2D and I'm connecting a headset with a mic on it to use with Skype and the mic doesn' work. I checked with system preferences\sounds and changed the audio input to the line in and I still get no audio, the meter doesn't move no matter how loud I speak. I tried changing the audio in under skype too and it just doesn't work. Am I doing something wrong or do I have a faulty MBP?

Don't forget to adjust the volume slider for the input in the Sound preference pane.

Umh, no it's not powered. It's just one of those logitech headphone/mic headsets from radioshack. I used to use this headset with my shuttle desktop. Do you have to have a powered mic for it to work???

I could be wrong, but I think so. It's a line in, not a mic input, so I think it needs to be powered. Your desktop might have had a true mic input, which would not need to be powered.

The easiest solution is the Griffin iMic. Works fine. Or a bluetooth microphone.

That was a misconception of mine upon purchase as well. It is a Line In, not a mic jack. So if you are using something that is powered or perhaps an optical connection off some sort of device you would use that port. Otherwise you would need to use either the internal mic (I find it works just fine, no one ever complains) or get a USB mic.

Griffin iMic is excellent. I never use the built-in headphone jack on my iBook since the iMic isolates the audio through USB giving it perfectly clear and crisp quality. Same goes with the Line-in/Mic. You will come through very clear.

Is there any solution for connecting unpowered minijack mics? I've got a nice little lav i'd like to use for lectures (the internal mic is crap, especially when typing). Some sort of attachment to power it?

That's because it's a LINE in, not a MIC in.

Get an iMic or a USB headset.
