Hey guys. I just got a link bracelet (Silver 42) from Apple, and hope this review helps give some people who are trying to decide on it some insights.

Summary: GORGEOUS, HEAVY, slightly uncomfortable, rattles, slightly cheap feeling, GORGEOUS.

Pros:

1. This thing is absolutely gorgeous. This is coming from someone who criticized it as looking too Casio. It wasn't even on my list of potential bands because in pictures, it looked so much like those old school Casio watches. And it does in a sense. But when you put it on your wrist, it just takes on a different character. The links wrap around your wrist like some futuristic exoskeleton from a sci-fi movie. And I can't help but think "metallic snake" for some reason when looking at it. It catches the light in the most spectacular way. It looks like a brushed chrome liquid metal. That's the best way to describe it.

2. It gives the watch a MUCH heavier feel. I am including this in both pros and cons, because as a pro, it makes the watch feel that much more luxurious and high-end. It's even heavier than the gold editions I've tried on.

3. The Apple watch looks like it was made for this band.

Cons:

1. It rattles. Because of all the intricate linking parts, like the links that are detachable, the whole band rattles and makes very cheap sounding noises. I am not saying it is a cheap band in any way. I know it is not. But those small tinny rattling sounds make it sound like it has pot metal or plastic parts when it doesn't. There is also squeaking when you use the butterfly clasp.

2. The weight makes the whole watch uncomfortable for me personally. I never noticed I had the watch on with the Milanese and BCB. I only noticed it with the sport band once I began to sweat and feel suffocation with the WSB. But with the Link Bracelet (LB), I feel the watch ALL the time. My wrist is starting to feel a persistent discomfort, like I have a very tiny dumbbell on there all the time. Hopefully I will just get used to it, or possibly my wrist just needs to get stronger to accommodate the extra weight. But for now, there is a very very slight discomfort. Not pain, but just something there nagging me.

3. While the top of the band is brushed stainless and looks gorgeous, the sides look like a duller finish. They just look murky or not as nicely brushed/polished. It's weird because on the DLC version, it has a very polished and shiny finish, which matches the watch body. IMO, they should have made it the same polished finish as the SS watch body so that it would blend in at the connection point. Right now, there is a sharp boundary between body (polished SS) and the LB (dull murky brushed finish on the ends).

4. Butterfly closure feels cheap, and squeaks. Yep. $500 band, but squeaks like a rusty tricycle. The butterfly closure is really cool, but it is not a precise lock, and the parts are so thin that they feel cheap.

In sum, it is absolutely gorgeous, but could use some improvements.

No one said I didn't like it. I love it actually. But those above criticisms are valid and true, except the weight and discomfort are just my personal experiences. Others may have different experiences.

No it is not on loosely. They ALL rattle. It is just a consequence of how they are built. If you look closely at the parts, and how every link attaches and how the clasp works, it's obvious why it rattles. Everyone can go and try this for themselves. It doesn't rattle all the time. Just when you shake or move it a certain way. But they will all do this. I am not saying it is a huge problem, but your denying that it rattles is just either blind loyalty, or you haven't noticed yet.

The squeaking is only when I am opening and closing the clasp. I've already experienced the same on 3 different units. You can't do much when you have a metal-on-metal hinge with very small and thin parts, that aren't oiled/lubricated. This may vary from person-to-person, but they will all eventually squeak a little unless people start lubricated these joints.

like others have said, my space black link doesn't rattle, feels nice and tight and doesn't feel too heavy... just heavy enough.

It's actually a bit too light to my taste, but I believe it was Apple's choice to do so. I believe it is due to the complex engineering that goes into this band with the detachable links think of a skeleton. Most of the Steel bands on the market are heavier than the Link bracelet. I think you are just not used to wear steel bracelets..

Honestly, mine doesn't rattle either. I'm shaking my wrist and all I hear is the whole thing, watch and all, move about. But no metallic rattle sound whatsoever. And my clasp doesn't squeak.

Word of advice from a former link bracelet owner.. Return it and get an Apple Watch Sport + classic buckle (lightest weight combo). It is so much lighter and more comfortable. You forget your are wearing a watch. I'm immensely happy with my decision to go with a watch sport instead of SS + link. 2¢

Been wearing my SB with black link since May 19 and it has never rattled nor is it heavy. I have two apple watches, the SB LB and the SW with the SB. I change between the two on weekends. Yes the SB is heavier than the SW but because the link band made of metal.

Same as many here. I have a Space Black Stainless Steel link bracelet and it doesn't make ANY noise. I think many people might find the clasp cheap feeling because it's so thin. I had a fairly thin clasp on my previous Citizen watch and this one is much thinner.

It's extremely comfortable for a link band and doesn't pinch at all.

+1

CB has become my daily AW band for both work and at home, except when work out (WSB) or dress up or show off (ML), compared with ML and WSB.
It is not only the lightest combination. It has a right amount of friction to prevent watch slide up and down the wrist even though I wear it slightly loose, but does not feel stickiness compare with ML or WSB.

Interesting thread. Thanks to the OP for posting.

And have to agree here.

I just got my SS with link bracelet today (also have a sport with sport band).

At first I was TOTALLY put off by the link bracelet. It's thin and really lightweight feeling especially compared to my Rolex Submariner. The Rolex has an awesome bracelet with a super positive and solid feeling clasp.

I was, frankly, shocked out how thin and brittle the clasp on the link bracelet is. Wow.

Having worn it for a few hours it is growing on me. It looks more refined the the Rolex bracelet but I still think it is too thin.

To the OP: give it some time. Bands like this take a little getting used to. And I might add: they are obviously not as flexible if your wrist is bony or you are perfectly in between sizes.

The only thing I will agree with you on is that the clasp does concern me that it could break one day. I only own link style watches and this one is by far the lightest that I have, so it isn't heave to me at all. It also does not rattle or squeak. I wish the watch would have had a brushed finish instead of the shiny one, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a future watch with the brushed finish, that might get me to upgrade.

It is a fantastic bracelet. Don't get me wrong. I love it, and will probably keep it just for the looks. But it rattles. No question. I've seen it on 3 bands already. It's a consequence of having so many loose and intricate parts.

I happen to like design of the band on the Casio watch I'm thinking the OP is referring to, as it was very striking and still is. That is, if you can ignore the watch body, the Casio name, and the horrid watch face. Not being a watch person, I haven't noticed if anyone has made similar link bracelets for watches since then, but I'm very happy that the Ive/Newson team didn't listen to anyone trying stop them from a Casio redesign, if that was even mentioned.

One man's dumbbell is another man's feather. After wearing a modern Submariner (with the newer solid link bracelet, not the older flimsier hollow link version), for the past 5 years, the Apple link bracelet feels like a toy to me.

I can all but guarantee the majority of the links are hollow, mostly due to the sizing mechanisms of the removable ones, but also probably due to Apple deciding people would prefer a super light bracelet, and therefore either cast hollow links, or milled them out.

Compared to pretty much any steel bracelet from a modern luxury watch, the Apple link bracelet weighs almost nothing.

No , maybe you missed it, the OP has issued the proclamation in post #3 that if our bands don't rattle, it is blind loyalty or we're just not hearing it.....what a load of sanctimonious hogwash....

No. It's because due to the design of the links, it is impossible that your links don't make that noise unless you have the band wrapped so tightly that the pressure is holding all the internal components together and the links have no wiggle room to make the noise.

I've tested three bands, and they all do it due to the design. If it were some individual flaw, I would accept it as such. But it is clear that it is because EACH link has multiple components that are loose and move around. It's not like a solid piece of metal, connected to another one (which in itself, would rattle a little if the metal links could touch or at the connection point).

As for the squeaking, that is just a metal-on-metal hinge. Nothing you can do about it. Door hinges squeak. So will this one without lubrication. Get over it.

This is fanboyism at its best. I already said I loved the band, and that I am keeping it. That it is gorgeous, and fantastic. But you point out fair criticisms that are readily apparent for anyone to see, and the owners flip their ish. Now THAT is sanctimonious hogwash.

And apparently I got a lot of criticism for saying that I PERSONALLY found it to be much heavier, especially compared to the BCB and the Milanese. Criticisms like "It's not heavy at all" or "I don't think it is heavy." lol. See, that's another type of personal opinion. Yours.

I get it. You bought something, like it, but can't accept any legit criticisms. Enjoy in good health.

But everyone saying things like "if you don't like it you should return it" or who think my review was negative: what is wrong with you? Honestly. I even laid out the pros up front, and said I loved it.

I mean, this guy Glene, is starting to get insulting over (what is in my opinion) a fair review that praises the bracelet for its looks. lol. How sad do you have to be to do that over a bracelet for a watch?

The submariner bracelet is nothing special, at all.

I love love love the link bracelet. Please dont spread FUD when you don't know what you're talking about!

Yeah sorry, I have no idea what I'm talking about. The Sub bracelet with its ratcheted sliding clasp offering the world's easiest size adjustment, and links milled from solid 916L steel is basically crap. Who cares if it weighs twice as much as the Apple bracelet and barely makes a sound?

I've just been collecting watches since 1980. I've only owned about 500 of them. What the hell do I know?

When I worked at that watch dealer in that little town, NYC, it was only for a few years, and only on weekends. Clearly I couldn't have learned much there.

And I forgot that old rule that when someone disagrees with me, I'm completely wrong. You love the link bracelet...obviously that makes me an idiot! Duh! How could I be stupid? Thanks for setting me straight.

p.s. You should be a lawyer! Your argument skills are awesome! You'd win every time! "Your honor, I love love love my client! Stop saying he's a criminal when you don't know what you're talking about!" Case dismissed!

Another thing about the link bracelet that I do not like is the clasp mechanism. It is clunky to put it on, fasten one buckle and then the other.

This is in comparison to my submariner which is one-hand easy and fast. I think the dual clasp symmetrical mechanism is aesthetically but not functionally pleasing.

Yes. Brushed finish. The shiny finish doesn't match the milled matte finish of the Link. Looks better with the sport band ...
