Link from safari back to email app gone

I've noticed that since I updated to iOS 18 that when the mail app sends me to safari to open an email attachment, the return link to the email app from safari isn't there. Used to be in the upper left hand corner of safari page, tiny little "return to email" link. That return link was very handy to have when reading email. I've looked at both the email app's settings and safari's settings and don't see anything obvious that would affect that.

Is this a bug, or is there a setting somewhere that I'm missing?

My wife noticed this when she got a new iPad 10 (running 17.7.2) The little “return to Mail” link is still there but doesn’t work. I have an older iPad (gen 6) also running iPadOS 17.7.2 and the link back to Mail is there and works fine. It also works fine on our phones, both on iOS 17.7.2.

From your description it sounds like instead of fixing the problem in iOS 18, Apple just removed the “return to Mail” link altogether. But in my wife’s case it seems to be a problem with the IPad 10. Go figure.

If you get any resolution (maybe in 18.1.1?) please post it.

I never did like that link, it’s difficult to hit (especially on iPad, where the browser Back button is so close). I long ago switched to just right-swiping at the bottom to return to the “previous” app, which is Mail of course after following a link. I get a once-a-day email with several industry news links, and it’s just second nature now to flip back to Mail to get the next link.
