Linksys Modem, Router and IP address Problems

Can someone please help.. I have a network with 2 Imacs running os 9 and a dell using xp and two g3 using os 9. None of which can access the internet as of Monday. Up til then all was well. File Sharing works like a charm. Tested my modem with a direct connection to a laptop, and same with router. But all the macs and the dell are giving me an IP address of 169.xxx.x.x consistently. I have exhausted all my searches to fix this issue and I am hitting a brick wall. Can someone throw me a bone????

You probably need to reset your router. Just unplug the router and wait about a minute before plugging it back in. Then make sure that you are using DHCP for your TCP/IP settings.

Thanks for the reply, but I did reset the router several times. The router works fine, as does the modem. I suspect there is something going on between the PeeCee and the Mac. What a headache......

Check on your Network Setup and Local IP address on your setup page of your Router. It looks like your DHCP server assigns public address class B (169.x.x.x) which already exist.

Also, can you check your DNS server? Just try to open http://64.62.137.66/ with safari if it go through and it it does then it's your DNS server that is not working.

why don't you do a traceroute to google and see where it ended. I believe you know how to do that since you can get your ip address.

The 169.254.x.x addresses are designated as self-assigned. They are not class B addresses used on the Internet. Go to www.arin.net and punch in 169.254.1.1 into the whois help at the top and you'll see they are IANA Special Use IP's.

By all of this, I mean if the system tries to get an address from a DHCP server and never gets a response, it self-assigns itself a 169.x.x.x address. This would be why file sharing is working, but not the Internet, as the self-assigned address does not assign a default gateway.

I'd highly recommend making sure that you get a valid address (i.e. an address that is not 169.x.x.x) if you plug a machine directly into the router.

It is quite possible that the router's switch and/or DHCP server are getting flaky. Mine did this and I had to trash it and get a new one.

Especially if everything was working together nicely before Monday, it sure sounds like a hardware failure.
