Linux and an External HD

Ok, I have a Mac with 35 gigs left on my HD, and I want to be able to boot both Mac and Linux.
I would like to boot linux off my External HD for space saving reasons, so (1) is it possible? (2) Can i choose before I turn the computer on which one to boot off of?

Also, can Linux play windows games? My friend says yes, but i've heard otherwise.
