linux or windows server for hosting iweb sites?

hi there, building my first website and ...

well .mac here in the uk is embarrassingly slow... so im going to look elsewhere for hosting & having never built a site or bought any hosting before .... i have a few questions...

1. linux or windows server? whats the difference for hosting an iweb site? will it matter?

2. any other things i should look out for (particularly relating to macs/iweb) before signing up with a hosting provider?

atm, i was looking at http://www.streamline.net/ or http://www.zen.co.uk/Hosting/
(only as family have had no problems with streamline, and zen are supposed to be mac freindly?)

thanks for any advice you can give :)
 
LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) servers are pretty much the norm for anyone who doesn't code using ASP (for which you need Microsoft IIS Web Server as opposed to Apache w/ PHP). They're generally very solid and secure so long as you go with a decent host.

A good LAMP shared hosting package will do you just fine, personally I always recommend A Small Orange. Don't use a UK host, it's pointless when you can get much better deals in the US, especially with the rocking exchange rate :D

ok another noob question, if you dont mind ...
im working on one site at the moment, but i may have a second site to host shortly ...
can you host 2 completely different sites [with different domain names] on one web host package?
 
With ASO you can definitely host more than one site on the same hosting package (I currently have several on mine), and I'm sure you can do the same with other hosts.
 
Soooooo ... when uploading your files, i hear about FTP apps such as Cyberduck / Transmit etc etc ...

Am i missing something, or can i not use the 'The File Manager' or 'Web Disk' in cPanel to do this?

They're very simple web based uploaders that can only do one file at a time. You definitely want an FTP client. I like Transmit, not free, but very good.
 
Ive used lonex.com for years on many websites and they are very reliable. Never had problems with them. They are from the UK but have both UK or US servers (your choice), they are cheap, you get a free domain name, support for multiple domains and they sell cheap domains.

For my FTP, I use the open source "cyberduck", works great for my use.
