I have a bunch of USB drives that were built on various Linux systems and I want to set up a Linux server on my currently Mac-only home network to provide access to these drives. I know I can mount these drives on a Mac using MACFUSE, but I've found that the read performance is not that good. I also don't want to do this via a VM for similar reasons.

I have also found that sharing drives between the Mac and Linux world is not for the faint of heart. Does anyone know of a good source for this specific configuration that covers the details on both the Mac (Mavericks for now) and Linux (Ubuntu) end of things?

It's rather trivial if you use Samba (Windows file sharing protocols)or Netatalk (Apple file sharing protocols) on the linux machine to share to Macs.

I have been trying to do this "trivial" task for the better part of two days with nothing but frustration and endless googling. Can you provide me a link to a site where they spell out how this trivial task is accomplished using Mavericks?

These would be installed on the Linux server you want to build, not the Mac.
These directions should work for Samba. I wouldn't bother with Netatalk.

NFS is also an option that's included in both Linux and OS X but setting that up can be a bit more complex.
