Linux Web Server

Hello,
I have to set up a Web Server so I'm looking for a Linux distribution.
Since I have never used any Linux distro I would like to receive some suggestions about that. Which distro do you use? How about Ubuntu Server Edition?

Ubuntu is generally touted as a great distro to start with as a newb to Linux. With that you should also look at LAMP as a way to setup a web server quickly.

I used the Ubuntu Server distro in the past to set up a test server for testing purposes. But I am just a web designer and not a server admin guy so I can't say which distro might be better. I just know that the Ubuntu one was easy enough for me to set up and get running.

Moreover, doesn't Ubuntu SE come with Apache and MySQL already installed?

They all have some form of desktop environment (GUI via console or xterm, not just shell CLI). CentOS uses GNOME for example but users customize often. Linux, being open source, is plentiful in flavors, i.e.

Then scroll down to TECHNICAL and look at he column on the far right of that table, and start clicking on links to take you to pages that show examples of and describe the features of various desktop environments or windows managers.

GNOME is common to most, KDE to many and probably are the two most popular if you want me to narrow it down, but that link I gave you is the full story, all possibilities, to help you make an educated and informed decision.

As another user noted, CentOS is popular on VPS's and dedicated webhosting and is a VERY stable flavor of Linux that works with Java, LAMP, and supports RPM installations extremely well. I have it via my Liquid Web VPS, love it, no problems, fast and stable, so I recommend it as well based on my experience.

+1 for CentOS.

I use it at home for my home server, and lots of web hosts use it for their web servers.

When installing it, make sure that you tell it to install the web server. Otherwise, you'll have to install it using YUM or an RPM later.

I'd say use Debian. I use it, and just the fact that it has apt-get makes it worth it.

Think of it as a installer/uninstaller for Linux.

Here's some stats on my server:

Fedora 6 - Lasted 1 Month before Mysql Stopped Working
Fedora 7 - Lasted 1 Week, Postgresql Failed.
Ubuntu Server 7.04 - Slow Internet connection with hardware, it was a bug.
RedHat Server - For kicks and giggles I installed it without a sub. number - 2 Days.
Debian - 4 Days, Got sick of trying to figure out the CLI commands to "Make" my 4 Ethernet cards to work.
CentOS 4 - 5.2 - 1 Year and Going strong. I also run 2 virtual machines via VMware one running Fedora 9 for mysql and one running CentOS 5.2 for Oracle.

Go with CentOS

I prefer the CLI (Command Line Interface) with no GUI because its faster to do things. Alternatively, you can install webmin, just google it.
