Just a query about Lion and the server version

My question is - Is the server version Lion plus extra server bits and pieces or is it a different beast entirely.

I have a 2010 mac mini and an old (but still great) core duo macbook. I also plan to get a macbook pro next year (hopefully remodelled)

I was hoping to put lion on my mini to serve my other macs. Would I need to have the Snow Leopard server installed on my mini beforehand?

Would you recommend the server version? Any help appreciated.

According to Apple, Lion Server will be an add-on to Lion, downloadable from the App Store for $49.99.

From the press release:

Mac OS X Lion will be available in July as an upgrade to Mac OS X version 10.6 Snow Leopard® from the Mac App Store for $29.99 (US). Lion will be the easiest OS X upgrade and at about 4GB, it is the size of an HD movie from the iTunes Store®. Mac OS X Lion Server requires Lion and will be available in July from the Mac App Store for $49.99 (US).

Oh ok, so I'd have to buy Lion, then buy Lion server.

According to what Nutmac posted it seems so yes, you'd have to buy Lion Server and then Lion, although I can't understand why they would make you do that, you could run Lion server without Lion at all or at least you should be able to.

Frankly, I think add-on is a better route. Sometime in July, every Macs will come with Lion (and every Macs purchased from June 6th are eligible to free upgrade). Instead of shelling $80 for Lion Server, all we have to do is pay $50.

And it's not like Mac OS X Server was a different OS from Mac OS X. It was just Mac OS X with additional server applications and services.

you probably don't need lion server. most server tasks like filesharing can easily be done wirthout the server version. uless you need things like your own ical or wiki server, vpn concentrator or dns server, the normal version will be fine.

Making Server an addon to Lion has me wondering how virtualisation will work. Client OS X installs don't work under VMWare, so how can server even be installed?

No, you should only need the latest version of Snow Leopard (Client or Server). The instructions on Apple's website are for those who are upgrading an existing server, and merely state that you must be running the latest version of the Snow Leopard Server software that would already be installed on that server in order to download Lion and then Lion Server.
