I have upgraded the ram and processor on the early 2006 1.1. I have upgraded the firmware to 2.1 and I know it can now run lion.

My question is should I run it over snow leopard or will I see better perfomance on snow leopard vs lion or will the benefits of lion outweigh the slight performance hit. Thoughts please ? many thanks.

I'd suggest giving Lion a try. You'll still have to edit or remove the SupportPlatforms.plist as the 2006 Mac Mini's logicboard ID isn't in the supported list.

Yeah I'll give it a go seems the software I use has a slightly newer version for lion

I think you should keep Snow Leopard unless you need a newer feature that Lion provides. Safari on Snow Leopard is not really useful anymore (it's incompatible with Facebook and Gmail), so You'll probably prefer using Firefox which is great on desktops, since it drains more battery on laptops.

So if you say safari is no good should I update to lion then to use it

I never had Lion installed on my Macs. I don't know how is Lion's Safari. Actually, I never liked Snow Leopard's Safari, even when SL was the current OS. When I upgraded to Mavericks, then I started using it because it was more lightweight for laptops.

Didn't know. How does this manifest?

Remember that Lion is the Windows Millenium of Mac-osx-es.
If you can't go without, use it, otherwise stay far away.

Overall I found Lion to run acceptably although the graphics performance will take a hit in Lion. That's why I keep my 2007 mini (1.83 model, 3GB ram) on SL.

I'd stay on SL unless you really want a specific feature of Lion. From what I remember, Lion was fairly slow compared to SL. Mountain Lion was much better.
