Lion OS Server as Mail Server (Macs, Windows Pc's (Thuderbird), Ubuntu(Mail Client))

Dear Sirs,
I have a situation, where we are looking to introduce a mail services amongst our employees for effective communication.
So we have been looking in to options available in the market, So we could figure out that we have an option of going with,
MS Exchange Server, Email Services on Ubuntu and we've been awaiting for Lion OS Server.


Case Requirements:

Ability to create mail user groups which should enable the administrator set access controls on user groups to communicate intra-Domain only (amongst abc.com, def.com etc..) and a few other users with the ability to communicate across all the external domains too (abc.com, def.com, all domains in the internet).

This is to ensure the security of information, not being passed.

Suggestions on:

1) Will Lion Server's Mail server provide a feasibility to host mail boxes for non mac or IOS users to communicate with it just to send/receive email using any third party Mail clients such as Thuderbird etc..

2) Will it let us provide the Domain Access control settings on user groups.

We would have around 30-40 users.
We are looking forward towards Lion OS Mail server because, it provides a platform for ease in administration.

Please advice.

I am not entirely sure how Lion Sever will handle this. However I am certain that Kerio Connect can handle it, and it runs on all the platforms you mentioned as well as has support for Windows, Linux, and Mac on both the server and client level.

We run it exclusively for all of our clients, it also integrates via Active Directory, Open Directory for Mac, or Open LDAP. This is really the direction that you may want to look. I was in your shoes about 2 years ago before we switched.

Am so glad with your suggestion, I see Kerio, charges annually and has per client licensing.

Also would it support the Access Rights of a mail user.

qwerty9, I am going to post some more info in that other thread in just a little bit, but I think for what you are trying to do you need something a little bit more advanced then Lion Server. It took me a day and a half just to work around a bunch issues just to get some basic email on multiple domains working.

I can't, I actually looked for some myself before I finally beat Lion's mail server into submission. The only ones I found where all paid apps that started in the few hundred dollar range, too pricey for me. If you Google for osx mail server you will get some results.

Support for non Macs in my exp. has been very bad. If you want a low cost solution Kerio is a GREAT option but if you want a rock solid option maybe talking to a Microsoft rep about Small Business Exchange would work. Microsoft offers cloud solutions hosted and maintained by them.
