Lion pre-installed on new Mac question

I plan on purchasing a new MacBook Pro later this summer. Will I be able to upgrade my old MacBook Pro with Lion from the new one? If so how? Thnx.

If you buy through the App Store, you can install it on 5 Macs or so. If you buy a Mac including Lion, you can't? That would suck to be honest. In my opinion there should be a way to register your Lion purchase with the Mac, so you can then download it for free on your other Macs.

Historically, the OS X that has come with a new Mac has always just been for that Mac alone. (The OS X disks will actually only work on that particular mac model.) This is the first time, however, that a normal OS X license is allowed to be installed on all your macs. It's completely possible that when you register your Lion-equipped Mac with your AppleID, you will be able to log in the App Store on your old MBP and download it. I doubt it, but we'll just have to wait and see.

I'd like to know too if there's a DVD or USB stick (as with the MacBook Air) with Lion on it. There should be some way to re-install the OS on your new Mac if needed. And if that's the case, you can probably use it to install Lion on other Macs as well.

There will be a small partition which allows you to reinstall lion. I forget where I read that

With the recovery partition Apple might eliminate the DVD or thumb drive. We will soon see what ships with the new MacBook Air.

As others have stated, you can reinstall Lion from the Recovery HD. Erasing the drive does not remove this partition.

And if a virus happens to corrupt the OS partition and recovery partition - what then? What about it the hard drive fails (which would of course also mean the recovery partition is lost) and we have to replace it? How then do we install it? Will Apple have some means to install it onto a USB stick or DVD and then install it onto an unbootable mac - or do we have to visit the genius bar or send it in for repairs?

I would not be too surprised if all new mac hard drives are altered with custom firmware so we can't replace a hard-drive ourselves anyway (like the new iMac) so a hard-drive failure is likely to spell an expensive repair in any case.

I think the air will be different because it already haas such small storage. i am going to guess that the air will ckntinue to use a usb stick with no recover partition on the ssd.
