Lion server external storage

What kind of external storage will Lion Server see for me to use the device as a file share? Or, in other words why won't Lion Server recognize my external USB drives as a share?

Is it formatted HFS+? Or at least a file system thats writeable by OS X?

You can make an new share and point it to this drive. add users/privileges to it.
In other words the server is not going to share an external drive by default.
