Lion Server - Worth it? Can I use it?

I just got a brand new Applecare replacement Mac Pro. I own a small business that currently has 5 computers. 4 are Mac and one PC. The program we mostly use runs off Windows (wished it didn't) and we run it off a MacBook Pro using a Virtual Machine.

My question is ... Is Server worth it. By that I have seen many negative reviews on it. I am a server newbie. I was using my previous Mac Pro mostly for photo and video editing which is not my business but more of a hobby.

Also would I be able to use server having a mixed bag of OS platforms and can it push out the program I am running on my VM to other computers and let me finally have that program networked?

I doubt server will do anything for you. The server add-on doesn't change how your programs function, so I'd just save your money.

It's worth it because it costs 30 bucks. But it is not worth much more than that.

Lion Server still has a few bugs/broken things that hopefully will be resolved going forward with Lion.

The heck with it ... @ $50 I have invested so much into other Apple stuff that this is just a drop in the bucket! I am downloading it now off the Apple Mac Store!

That makes no sense. It has value because it costs you money? Cheap? Sure, but value in this situation? No way.

OP, you can install it, but it's not going to redistribute your program or make it networkable. No piece of software will convert another piece of software to make it magically work across platforms.

Maybe you should look for replacement programs. What is it you are running?? Server can help you with a couple of things though like mailserver wiki's webserver manage the other macs manage your i-devices central update just to name a few. On the other hand to set these things up properly is not as simple as apple may suggest it is.
