Okay, I picked up a new time capsule today. Did a full/first time machine backup and all is good. Now, when I upgrade to ML on Friday I can just run time machine and it will be OK??

If you want a clean install then yes you can do a full restore from TM.

If you just want to upgrade than it's good practice to have a back up, but OS X just overrides the existing Lion files.

Clean install takes too much effort and from what I've read there's no real advantage. Just want to be sure time machine will just backup the new ML stuff w/o any problems.

It will. TM will just keep on running adding to the original Lion backup set.
