How close is Liquid Retina XDR 2500+ dimming zones compared to per pixel dimming?

First we need to understand blooming and black level with this example.

Now for the comparison (per pixel dimming on left and Liquid Retina XDR on right). What differences do you see? On a small phone display already noticed blooming around closed caption text and blown out face. Anything else?

When a camera on an automatic setting takes a picture, or films a video, it measure the average of brightness in order to make a correct exposure. In this case, the images have the most amount of screen space and so is what the sensors uses to base the exposure on. The small bright white writing at the bottom will obviously be over exposed. This is clearly what this video shows.
I’m not arguing good one way or the other regarding your incessant ‘iPad is bad’ posts, but this is a clearly flawed example. The *only* way to make this a viable ‘proof’ of any such claim, is by isolating each screen, and then using a properly manually adjusted camera to film each one under the same conditions. Then splice them side by side in the edit.
Waving a phone camera around in front to the two like that is flawed proof of anything in relation to exposure.

I was worried about possible blooming but apple already had local dimmingjon their pro monitor so it must be decent, right? Maybe not

iPad has more dimming zones and each one will be smaller as the screen is smaller - so as long as the algorithm is good, it should reduce blooming/halos vs the larger monitor. Wonder why they grouped them into 2x2 clusters rather than individual 10,000 zones?

Most likely this.

But look how many clueless posts follow, saying how overrated miniLED is :D

mini LED is fine in that it's an upgrade over what we already have in iPads but there are flaws with it that you need to deal with every day such as blooming. OLED is superior to Mini LED. yeah it has flaws too like burn in but that's only something you might experience after a long period of time. it's just disappointing that Apple couldn't get OLED in the Pro model because it's not the best product it could be which i'm sure is what any Apple fan would want, right?

There will be good reasons why they didn't though.
well yeah there is a reason they didn't use it. probably same reason iPhone 12 didn't get a 120Hz OLED panel. maybe they can't put it in without affecting battery life. and/or maybe supply of 120hz OLED panels isn't good enough to keep up with iPad sales.

the fact is that OLED is the better display technology. like i said above, both have flaws but one has a flaw that you will experience every time you use it and one has a flaw that you might experience after a long period of time. as someone who has an iPhone 12 Pro Max and wants an iPad Pro it sucks that any iPad I buy will have inferior screen quality to my iPhone.

for a Pro model OLED is likely the end goal for Apple. Mini LED is just gonna here until such a time Apple can get an OLED in the iPad because yeah Mini LED is upgrade over what is already in the iPad. If Apple don't go with OLED it'll be because they ditched Mini LED for Micro LED. Now that, Micro LED, is the real deal (no blooming. no burn in) and what people should be excited about but it's a long time off.

I think it's the other way around @krspkbl. OLED will be replaced by something else, as they can't fix the burn in issues. Mini LED surely only is an interim solution, but who knows what happens in 10 years.

I think if OLED was the goal for Pro Macs/iPads we would have already seen one. They probably pumped a ton of money into the Mini LED tech, I don't know if they would have done that if they want to use OLEDs instead.

btw: I love my LG C9 (best TV I can imagine), but I'm not so sure on mobile devices. I have a 12 Pro after an Xr and I really miss the better battery (and colors). The ThinkPad with an OLED also has a hilariously bad battery performance because of the OLED.

Let's wait and see how the Mini LED screen in the iPad performs. That's a lot of dimming zones for that screen, and I'm sure it will look great. It will obviously be the best screen in any iPad (or tablet I want to use), so I'm hyped :)

I think videos and stills with phone cameras are a little bit misleading. The XDR display, not on the iPad only has 576 zones. That's a FAR smaller number than 2500 zones in the XDR display on the new iPad Pro. I saw the blooming on the subtitles in the video and yeah, that's slightly disheartening, but it's a tradeoff for a much better tech than what is currently available in any other iPad, iMac, MacBook, MacBook Pro, etc. The blown out face we are seeing is likely more due to the exposure of the camera filming the screens. I don't think it'll be perfect, but I am looking forward to the new display when I get mine in a few days!

I also love my LG OLED and while I would have loved to see an OLED display on the 12.9 iPP, I think the 1000nit peak full screen brightness and 1600nit peak brightness are something that I am looking forward to that my LG OLED cannot do.

Reading the comments from the original poster of the video of iPad vs samsung on Reddit, he did say that the camera recording the video causes the blooming to be more obvious and wasn’t the best settings. He was just doing a quick video for people who was asking him questions for comparisons. He says “ in person, the iPad is much better than what the video shows”.
I for one am glad I ordered my 2021 iPad Pro 12.9 and I am sure it will be a perfect machine for me. I have read that the mini led is brighter, that means I can sit outside with my iPad in the summer and not have issues trying to see what is on my screen. My 2015 iPad Pro is terrible to view outside, the screen does not get bright enough to compensate for how bright it is during the day. OLED is beautiful, and shows pure black, great on TVs, but I have read it doesn’t get bright enough for use in extreme bright areas. Give the mini led a chance to show you what it can do on a tablet that is used everywhere indoors, and outdoors. :)

As with everything screen related, it is more or less impossible to convey how it actually looks through a camera and playback.

But for just watching videos OLED will most likely still be better, but I think I can survive the Mini-LED when watching a movie on a small screen while on an airplane or something like that. There are upsides to Mini-LED for other areas where I use the iPad Pro.

It will be an upgrade from the current displays regardless.

Oh I certainly look forward to the Mini-LED display for watching movies, shows, or videos on my iPP. I am currently watching a lot of content on my 2018 iPP. Just easier to do while in my bedroom at night, not wanting to disturb my housemates by watching in my home theater in the living room.

Can’t you use headphones with your tv? That’s what I do when the family sleeps upstairs

Oh absolutely and sometimes I do. However, it's also communal space, so if people are also wanting to hang out, lounge on the couch, etc. then I just concede to my room if I'm really wanting to watch something. The living room is also connected and open to the kitchen, so if people are eating or cooking, I take that into consideration.

I’m sure the 12.9 iPad will be a great alternative to a tv then. 👍

Wow thats bad. Wish they just put an OLED in instead. I’ll stick with the 11” model.
Uhhhh what's bad? I hope you realized that the top photo is of the Pro Display XDR monitor, not the new iPad. The video below is of the iPad, and it looks phenomenal to me. What did you see that looks bad?

Don’t bother. Dude’s been trashing anything but OLED since the new display was announced.
