Hello

So I did some research after looking at the "iPhone 13s are a bit overrated" and that is 100% true its just a 12s with a small notch and a recycled display from the iPad pros call it what you want. Battery and camera are not "Ground breaking" you would expected that every year ....

There has been 33 releases of the iPhone and a few with Major changes that would expect as we have seen this trend with apple since the start. ;)

All the dates are the year they may not be exact but they are either the Launch of the phone or the keynote !!

If any are very wrong just reply and I will fix

So here we have a list of the iPhones all grouped by year and release dates and we can see a trend

At every "Design and Change there will be a line so we no what was changed" and I am excluding chips cameras and battery and sensors etc. As that would be added each year of course :).

So why did I make this and spend time on it ??

Well I wanted to know where the "Major" changes of the iPhone were at and how long it took them to remove a feature.

1 iPhone (LAUNCH - January 9th, 2007) ------------------------------- First release first design - 1Year

2 iPhone 3G (LAUNCH - June 9th, 2008) ------------------------------- First design of the iPhone that has been changed since the start
3 iPhone 3GS (LAUNCH - June 9th, 2008)
4 iPhone 4 (LAUNCH - June 24th, 2010)
5 iPhone 4S (LAUNCH - October 14th, 2011)
6 iPhone 5 (LAUNCH - September 21st, 2012)

7 iPhone 5c (LAUNCH - September 20th, 2013)
8 iPhone 5s (LAUNCH - September 20th, 2013) ------------------------------- Introduction of TouchID

9 iPhone 6 (LAUNCH - September 19th, 2014)
10 iPhone 6 Plus (LAUNCH - September 19th, 2014) ------------------------------- New "Plus" Bigger size of screen

11 iPhone 6s (LAUNCH - September 25th, 2015) ------------------------------- Introduction of 3D Touch same design
12 iPhone 6s Plus (LAUNCH - September 25th, 2015)

13 iPhone SE (1st generation) (LAUNCH - March 31st, 2016) ------------------------------- Introduction to a budget iPhone
14 iPhone 7 (LAUNCH - September 16th, 2016) ------------------------------- Removal of the Headphone jack :(
15 iPhone 7 Plus (LAUNCH - September 16th, 2016)

16 iPhone 8 (LAUNCH - September 22nd, 2017)
17 iPhone 8 Plus (LAUNCH - September 22nd, 2017)
18 iPhone X (LAUNCH - September 22nd, 2017) ------------------------------- First major overhaul of the iPhone since 2007 - 10 Years and introduction to FaceID and removal of TouchID - 4Years

19 iPhone XR (LAUNCH - September 21st, 2018)
20 iPhone XS (LAUNCH - September 21st, 2018)
21 iPhone XS Max (LAUNCH - September 21st, 2018)

22 iPhone 11 (LAUNCH - September 20th, 2019)
23 iPhone 11 Pro (LAUNCH - September 20th, 2019)
24 iPhone 11 Pro Max (LAUNCH - September 20th, 2019)

25 iPhone SE (2nd generation) (LAUNCH - April 15th, 2020) ------------------------------- Budget iPhone with TouchID
26 iPhone 12 mini (LAUNCH - October 13th, 2020)
27 iPhone 12 (LAUNCH - October 13th, 2020)
28 iPhone 12 Pro (LAUNCH - October 13th, 2020)
29 iPhone 12 Pro Max (LAUNCH - October 13th, 2020)

30 iPhone 13 mini (LAUNCH - September 24th, 2021)
31 iPhone 13 (LAUNCH - September 24th, 2021)
32 iPhone 13 Pro (LAUNCH - September 24th, 2021)
33 iPhone 13 Pro Max (LAUNCH - September 24th, 2021) ------------------------------- Promotion Display added and smaller notch since X 4Years

So looking at all the years and features

From 2007 - 2013 it took them 6 Years to add a "new auth" method into the phone

From 2013 - 2016 - Every year we see something new or get removed or changed on an iPhone

BUT

From 2017 - 2021 4Y We see the same design with a smaller change on the iPhone 13.

Looking at the iPhone 14 or what's ahead it would make the iPhone 14 5Y "Since a design change" in 2013 we saw the Introduction of touchID. Could we see TouchID come back on the 14 👀

Let me know what you think as I said before the dates may not be right and may be a couple days off but the years and months are right :p

Timeline will be updated every year :)

Let me know your thoughts

Honestly, I don’t think Apple operates on a schedule like this at all. They introduce new features as technology changes and it becomes feasible to add the new feature. They remove old features when Apple deems them unnecessary. I don’t think they look at a calendar and say “Ok, this is year 5, so we need to introduce a big feature now”

Yes but it gives us a good indirection of what was added when and why it was removed. And moving forward when it could or would be added analysing everything and predicting

This logic is kind of like trying to predict what a stock will do on the stock market by looking at its past graph.
Some companies sort of follow a general timeline to model updates (car manufacturers) but it’s hard to be sure about  because they’ve only been doing the iPhone thing for a few years.
But if their past predicts the future- then yes, we’re “due” for something rather interesting very soon.

I like that you spent the time to respond and holy wow, thats a cool timeline ig. And ye iPhones have been pretty stale these years. Not get me wrong: ye these new phones are cool and stuff, but i miss the ol‘ days, the iPhone 5/6/7/X years. Year after year something new.

Also what does people think to this post

As pointless as your last where you again claim the iPhone 13 are nothing special and that iPhone 14 is the one to have. (View post history).

I don’t get your goal here?! If you don’t like the new phones, that’s fine but let people be happy with what they’ve got and stop trying to get analytical and suggest a set in stone map that iPhone devices follow, there isn’t one.

iPhone 14 could just as well be a further enhancement of what the 13 is.

There’s going to be less new tech inside if it is a full redesign than there was from the 12 to the 13 which you claim is poor/nothing special.
And if you disagree what do you honestly see Apple adding???

Oh dear. Someone’s got a boner over Touch ID. It’s never coming back by the way. You seem to forget the huge redesigns of the iPhones 4, 5 and 12 and the huge number of features they came with.

There isn't much left for iPhone to improve after 13. These can happen:

-faster cpu but no one can feel the different
-on screen touch I'd
-change the look of the phone again
-more color
-3x zoom becomes 4x
-little bit bigger size but not much since iphone cannot be so big
-more not so useful software stuff like cinema mode video

All of these are not that useful, I can keep using old iphone no problem, 13 will be the last generation with big hardware upgrade like real bigger sensor.

Theoretically they could make another huge upgrade either the 14-15. Then they see what Samsung’s doing and see if they implement it

Just think what the iPhone designer guys are dealing with. I bet they show up to work at times without any idea what the next iPhone should have. Blank page.
Jony Ive made a comment once about that / showing up to work being horrified that he had no new ideas. Blank page.
