I have a little (not so little actually) dent on the top aluminium case (near the apple let s say)..
.Does anyone know if i can replace just case without the screen?
and how much would it cost?

thank you

yes, the top of my case on my old powerbook was dented after it went in for repair and they ordered a replacement top bit from apple.

so yes. not sure of cost as my repair was free as it wasnt my fault. im guessing at $30-$50 including fitting. im sure its something they can do in store whilst you wait if they have it in stock.

if you are lucky they might even do a goodwill fix if you approach them the right way since its under warranty.

Depends how visible it is and how perfect you want your MBP to be.

It will be very visible to others who will see the back of your laptop screen where the dent is.

Ummmmm, no.

It will cost quite a bit just to pay someone to do the job (plus the cost of the part).

You literally have to take the computer apart completely to get to where you can remove and replace the display backing. You have to remove the topcase, all the drives, the logic board, and everything else in the computer. You have to get it down to where the display is no longer connected to the computer. That is a major job and you will pay for it.

And no, you won't be able to have it done while you wait. Unless you want to wait a few hours.

The worse it looks, the less likely it is to get stolen..the less you have to worry about keeping it perfect...

the worse it looks. I don't really blame you, my pb has a dent in the same location and it's annoying.

I did find a site called Powerbook Medic where they sell replacment parts for Mac laptops. I believe that the case that covers the screen runs about $100 plus shipping. They have detailed tear aparts to walk you through the process if you feel like you can change the part out yourself. Looking on eBay might find you one cheaper. Hope this helps! :)

i stand corrected. thought it was a simple flick of a few key areas by a skilled tech and it would pop off... i was wrong.

It would be of the most upper satisfaction if you uploaded a photograph of the damage caused to the enclosure of your portable device, also known as Notebook computer or Laptop Computer, in which this case is an Apple Branded Portable device configured with the Macintosh operating system version ten point four.

Yours sincerely,

it hurts so much to see that dent...i would try to get that fixed...and i am interested in how you got that dent...i always fear dropping my mbp when i'm moving it from my desk to my cover/backpack..

That is the correct part you are looking for. If you have not done this kind of repair/replacement before, I would highly suggest you pay to have it done. Even with the manuals, if you have not done this sort of thing a few times before, you are going to get overwhelmed very fast. If you do decide to do it, be very organized and take your time doing it. Make sure that you get the display cabling routed through the hinges exactly how they were before. Try not to touch the display at all if you can (the back of it). Make sure you put the same size/length screws back where they went before. If you put a longer screw where a shorter screw was supposed to be, you can damage the logic board or other internal components. Then you will go from having fully functional computer with a dent, to a non dented computer that no longer works and requires a much more expensive repair.

Good luck.

i read somewhere that its a criminal offence to harm apple products - intentionally or not .... its a crime against beauty!!!!! you are bad man!

... my guess is the mac police are on there way to your home now by tracking the ip address from your post.... run for the hills!! run run run!!!!

the maximum sentence you can get is life with a windows computer :)

thx man..
i think i ll just buy the piece and then take it to the apple service to make them assembly it..is it possible rite?(i mean they not gonna say like:"u gotta buy the case from us)...
apart from that..
is it also possibile to put the new "energy-saver" LCD display on the 2.33 mbp?
do u think it would increase my lifetime battery even without the sr chipset?

thx for listenin:)

lol fair enough..
i ll get spankd coz of that i m sure;):p:p

A word of warning... I had my display replaced. The repair guy told me that when they replace only the lcd it's very hard to get the lcd to match perfectly to the lid, so he ordered the entire top shell with the lcd. If it's not that big of a deal don't risk opening the computer for nothing.

id wait until you pick up a few more dents and scratches, by then the parts will be cheaper etc... and in the meantime if you are like me youll just accept the dent and enjoy not having to handle the mbp with kid gloves.... knowing that under the hood you have a beast of a machine!!! ;)

you can give it - plastic surgery - anytime later

.. and im sure your mbp feels 'tougher' for having a war wound....

A repair shop does not care if you buy the part from them or someone else. Anyone that is in, or has been in, the Apple repair/retail business knows that there is next to no margin in parts. All the big $$$ come from service. They are not going to make much on the part if you buy from them, but they will make much more by installing it.
