Some things the green button used to do but not any more, are there new workarounds?

Example 1: If you enlarge or reduce an image in Preview, how do you adjust the window now to auto-fit the new image size?

Example 2: How do you enlarge a window like the browser to fill the screen now without actually entering the full-screen mode?

I suppose this isn't really an app-specific question, more a general interface one so maybe I should try posting this in the Yosemite forum as well.

Option + green button will do what you want.

The old maximize button functionality is still there.

Just press the option (alt) key while clicking and it changes to the old maximize button.

Hold "option" key and press green button to zoom instead of fullscreen.

Also apparently double clicking the applications tittle bar does the old zoom function - but I have not tried it myself.

It appears lots of people want to know what has happened to the zoom button.
Hopefully Apple will provide users with the option to change the default fullscreen/zoom in System Preferences in the future.

Provide Feedback

I suggest everyone who thinks that the user should be given the option to choose the default fullscreen/zoom behaviour (in System Preferences) should send Apple feedback. The user could reverse the default behaviour, making the green button zoom and the "option" key to activate fullscreen instead.

I don't care if Apple keeps fullscreen as default but I do think they should at least give the user the option to change the default behaviour similarly to trackpad scroll direction - you can choose between "natural" (swipe up to scroll down) or traditional (swipe down to scroll down) in System Preference.

Hopefully they will listen and give the user some control.
It should not be hard to implement and I see no reason not to provide users with the choice.

Doesn't work in iTunes, but seems to work in most other apps. I hope Apple will add a System Preferences option to switch the behaviour around in a future update.

You can also double click on the title bar, if you don't have that set to minimize.

Double click tittle bar minimises

I just tried double clicking the title bar and it minimises the application. It does not zoom for me. How come others are saying that this works to zoom a window and it minimises for me?

bmac, in the Dock preferences uncheck 'double-click title bar to minimize'.

I agree there should be a way to default back to the Mavericks behavior (and have Option-click go full screen), having to Option-click most of the time has annoyed me since DP1 of Yosemite. I can easily see a tiny setting in System Preferences > General that does this.

Clearly they are trying to phase out the traditional use of the button (which as stated above can produce inconsistent results) in favor of full screen mode.

Out of curiosity, what size screen do you use? This seems to have a lot to do with my preferred behavior. For instance, on the 13" rMBP I use full screen mode the most, but on the 27" iMac I prefer the traditional maximize.

21" Imac. I can imagine fullscreen on 27" would be a lot of white spaces!

Even if people don't mind the fullscreen being default behaviour but think the user should still have a choice - then it is still worth giving feedback.
