Despite numerous, lengthy threads on this over at apple...

...I am surprised to see little mention of this here. But it has been reported on elsewhere:

My 2G iPhone lost wifi connection over the course of a day over a month ago. Since then its only seen a few networks and only for brief periods. I have yet to try putting it in the fridge but have read enough different threads suggesting it to know that is literally the only solution available to me, and that its not a permanent fix.

My iPhone was bought by a friend of mine about 2 weeks before the 16 gig came out, so its about 18 months old and out of warranty. It also has an enormous crack across the screen. There is no way Apple are gonna replace it for me and they're apparently not acknowledging the problem. 3.0 is just about the only hope that I have to get internet working on my phone again and something tells me with all the myriad new features apple have been so busy testing, they won't have bothered to fix this problem (who knows if it can even be fixed?). I just moved into a basement flat where my phonecalls break up and my connection alternates between 2g and none with a dash of edge every now and then and my phone has become pretty f£%$ing useless considering I take my 160gig iPod with me most places anyways.

It seems like this affects tons of ppl, but most of those will be within warranty and so it won't be an issue for them. As a longterm apple user who always gets annoyed with morons who throw their ipods around like they don't contain a HD and and attribute their failure to some 13-month-lifespan conspiracy, I am pretty annoyed to learn that apple are silent on this despite what seems like tons of affected ppl, not all of whom will still be under warranty.

nobody else on MR experienced this?

Nope, I have the original iPhone that I've been using since the first week they came out and wifi and every other function works just fine. And I do give it a hard work out each day using spreadsheets, a to do list email and other apps and it had performed flawlessly from day one. FWIW I haven't heard of this issue from any other users and I know quite a few users nor have I read about it on any of the iPhone boards I frequent.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5H11 Safari/525.20)

No never had anything like it.

I've had a 1st gen iPhone for almost 2 years and haven't had any problems with it. I abuse it too. I've dropped it a lot and it does have a crack that goes across the top (lots of scratches on the back too) but I have not had any hardware or connectivity issues.

My brother had the same issue, he had his iPhone fixed (new comm board). It's definitely hardware related.

iPhone 2G

I have an original iPhone with wireless no longer working.
I have read about the problem on other boards, never here. I haven't heard of the refrigerator trick tho. I keep wanting to go to the Apple Store and see if there was something they could do. I am out of warranty but my sensors are white.

I am going to see what 3.0 brings, then I am also upgrading here in Oct or Dec.

Edge isn't all that bad, but I had WiFi everywhere I went.

This is why you should always buy applecare...

It doesn't matter if your sensors are white - you're out of warranty, thus you're out of luck. Your only hope is if Apple makes an announcement that they'll fix this issue for out-of-warranty iPhones.

Unfortunately, since the iPhone wasn't mine to begin with, that didn't occur to me until it was too late. Realistically, tho, this is a rare circumstance and while its always better to err on the side of caution, how was I to know something would go wrong just after the warranty expired (supposedly because of an update Apple sent out remotely to make wifi faster under 2.2.1)? And apple may yet offer some kind of amnesty as they often do on widespread faults. It remains to be seen how widespread this problem is. By the looks of the posts on MR, not very. And aside from the usual difficulties in telling how big a problem is based on how much you hear of it on the internet, this particular issue is confounded by ppl chiming in about their wifi doesn't work with WPA2/at work/at home or simply having a different issue altogether.

Obviously, now that I've figured out that applecare costs 25 quid on ebay, I'm annoyed I didn't get it the moment I was given the phone, but having never bought an extended warranty for a phone before, it didn't occur to me that as an apple product, the iPhone's could be acquired very cheaply.

ummm. I hear your rant. BUT.

I mean, the phone has a major cracked screen and isn't working properly. Plus, you bought it second hand.

I vote for a new one.

I didn't buy it 2nd hand, I was given it when it was only a few months old. I've been fine with the crack for over a year, I just mentioned it because the guys at the genius bar are less likely to replace a phone that is already so damaged.

If it was just a regular phone, I might expect it only to last 13 months, but its a smartphone and expensive. Neither of my ipods have been so shortlived. Its not like the wifi issue is in any way my fault and if the airport card on my iMac crapped out 17 months into its lifespan and I had the misfortune of not having applecare (a mistake I wouldn't have made where a computer was concerned, but still...), and it was a widespread problem affecting tons of ppl who hadn't got applecare, likely to have been caused by a recommended software update on a legitimate version of their OS, I wouldn't expect to have to buy a new computer.

Livid about loss of wifi issue

Add me to the list, I've tried everything except the fridge treatment.

Do you wrap it in something first ?

Hope the update will fix this, but somehow i doubt it.

I am surprised that apple haven't responded to this problem also.

Just made a thread about this yesterday. Had the same problem with my 3G took it to the apple store today with a genius bar meeting and replaced it with no questions asked. :D

Would probably be a different story though if my screen were cracked. It wouldn't hurt to try though.

Oh, and it seems to be a hardware issue so I doubt 3.0 will fix it.

If you guys theorize that you lost wifi because of the last update, you should test that theory by flashing back to the previous firmware.

I don't theorize that the article does. I lost mine on the 3rd or 24th May, I think (pretty sure it was the 3rd but I'm unemployed and I can't distinguish one bank holiday from another). 2.2.1 came out in late Jan. Apparently, whatever 2.2.1 does to the phones (the assumption is that it unthrottles the wifi somehow), the wifi chip gets overheated.

Yeah, I suspect that even if it was down to the software update, the damage is likely to be irreparable by firmware alone, but who knows. FWIW, I tried the freezer for 5 min, in a sandwich bag, at 40% battery with the unit off, with no luck. Not sure if this means my problem is not the same as that of most of the respondents to the Apple discussion thread. I have not tried a low battery restore. At this point, I'm still annoyed about all my apps being copied back over in alphabetical order from the last restore.

I will try to run it down in time for 3.0. And if that doesn't work, I will do another restore then.

I suspect apple aren't officially responding to this problem yet because it only affects older units, so anyone not under warranty would soon be upgrading anyways. For the time being, however, the 3GS is so prohibitively expensive with o2 (they haven't even dropped the price of the 3G, they've just priced the 3GS higher) that it would be cheaper for me to buy a PAYG, throw away their sim and bung the one I'm using on my 2G into the 3G S. And that's £500 I just don't have right now.

All 3.0 did was make the wifi setting permanently greyed out. Awesome. Apparently other ppl have the same problem tho. So that's encouraging.
