Loading new iPad as present ?

I would like to give a present to friend who will be sitting for an exam I passed last year.
I have tons of ripped DVDs with lectures, pdfs of lecture outlines and "stacks" of electronic flash cards for the program Mental Case on my iPod Touch 32GB.
I would like to transfer this material to a newly purchased iPad Wifi 32GB, but I am not clear how, not having direct experience with iPad.
I suppose there must be a registration on initial set-up (credit card number ??) and also how to tie it to a AppleStore (iTunes) account (if he has one?).
As this should be a surprise, I am on my own. And he is not very good with computers, if you say give him sealed iPad and the material recorded on DVD.

This is a question that is asked often, and the answer is, give him the material on a DVD or flash drive, because the iPad is tied to a specific computer. You use iTunes to sync media to the iPad, and when you sync with another computer, all the stuff that's on the iPad but not on the new computer gets erased. While there are ways to work around this, if your friend is not comfortable with computers, the simplest way is for you to give him the files and have him drag them into iTunes.

I bought my iPad in Florida, and they set it up for me in the store without using iTunes. I was then able to use my iTunes account and download apps/music etc. before I got home.

When I got home to the UK, I set it up via my PC (and iTunes), synced loads of music and other stuff to it - and it didn't erase anything already on the iPad.

They have a special version of iTunes at the store just to setup iDevices.

And your purchased content didn't get erased because they were associated with your iTunes account. The OP wants to put his own content onto the iPad he's giving his friend. Those won't get automatically transferred when the friend syncs with his own computer, and will be deleted.

Actually, it could work if this friend never syncs the iPad with any computer, and just buys and downloads stuff directly onto his iPad. However, if he does that, he won't have any backup of the media content if anything ever goes wrong.
