Is there any price advantage to purchasing from a local Apple store as opposed to online? I've read student discounts still apply and such and that many like to buy local so they can ensure it works before taking it home, etc. I don't suppose the sales tax is affected (as in decreased) by purchasing locally, is it?

No price difference, the student discount will be available at the store. The sales tax will be the same. Purchasing at a store means that you will have instant access. As long as the stock Mac meets your needs, it makes sense.

I even make my online purchases at the local store. Have a good relationship with the staff.

As mentioned, you will get edu discounts at the store.

I prefer buying at the store as it is close to work, I can go in there and get product right away, and if I have any issues, I bring it right back in.

Once again... in a retail store, the student discount can be applied to hardware purchases, not software. If you want to purchase software at a discounted price, that must be done via Apple Online.

i talked to a sales guy at the apple store. he said i can get stock models and they add ram and airport cards right away. they do not put in a better graphics card. for that i have to order online.

unfortunately i CAN NOT order online in the store. i have to do that from home and i get my mac shipped home. that means if you want a different graphics card you can not buy in the apple store. you need to order online and go through the pain with UPS or FEDEX delivery to your home.:(

Well, I am looking for one with 1 gig of RAM (powerbook) as opposed to the default 512; this going to be a problem?
