Local Contacts vs iCloud Contacts vs others ...

Greetings!

I just want to make sure I'm understanding this correctly: are the iOS device's "local contacts" and "iCloud contacts" separate data stores?

I think I just got confused with "sync" vs "backup to iClouds" of the iOS device. Just wanted to make sure that local contacts data store is not the same as iCloud data store when they are syncing.

Contacts that are "On My iPhone" are on the phone, but are backed up to iCloud if you have that option checked for your iCloud backup.

Contacts that are from other services (Google, Yahoo, etc) are not store on the phone - nor backed up to iCloud.
