Local phone company that uses AT&T network...iPhone still possible?

I am all set to buy an iPhone but I have a problem. I get my cell service through a local phone company (CTC wireless) that uses AT&T wireless network. I got mixed messages from all three companies. Apple store guy told me to go to talk to cingular guy who told me to talk to CTC guy. CTC said they did not support the iphone, but my phone number showed up in the Cingular system when I talked to the cingular guy. The CTC guy also hinted there was a way around this, but obviously I don't want to risk spending so much money and it not working. Is anyone else in a similar situation?

well does your phone have a AT&T sim card? If it does I think it would be posible

Generally though, this is a no-go if you have an actual ATT account and are off-network.7

You need an AT&T account to activate an iPhone without starting a new plan. I couldn't even activate my iPhone with an old (pre-Cingular) AT&T account without spending a hour on the phone with AT&T as they converted my account. I would guess the chances of an iPhone being able to be activated with a small local carrier is zero, despite the fact that they use AT&T towers.

Still it might be possible to hack activate the iPhone using the various methods, and use the SIM card from the small carrier.
