After creating a location-based reminder yesterday, I noticed that the "Location Services" icon appeared in my status bar. Does this mean that if I'm not actually anticipating going to that specific location for another day or two that my phone's GPS will remain active the entire time, causing a significant drain on my battery?

Good question... was thinking about this too...

I think so, yes.

I think this is the case. Apple should perhaps allow users to set a "check location every nn minutes for reminders" option both as a default and on a per reminder basis.

Guys, no need to fret about your battery draining because of the Reminders app. They are most likely (actually, judging from my usage of the app, they are) using cell tower triangulation to determine your location. So no, the GPS isn't running all the time.

You may be right. I tried it out last night, though, and noticed that the Location Base Services icon was on. I went through everything trying to turn it off before finally realizing it was from my test reminder thing. And I did notice a significant drain on battery as it was on for about an hour.

The reminder was for me to do something when I got home, and as soon as I pulled into the drive way the reminder popped up. So I'm assuming it would have to at least switch to actual GPS at some point to know that I was actually on the property.

If you have WiFi at your house, and enabled on your phone, then it will just detect when it is near the WiFi access point. It can even detect your neighbor's WiFi. No need for GPS always. I've noticed no increased battery drain when using location reminders, and I had one on for over a week.
