So I'm a college student living with 4 other guys and I have my mac mini + 2 external HDD's in our living room hooked up to my TV running XBMC. I was looking to get some type of box that I could keep those 3 things in that can lock but still have the cords able to run out. Then if that box had a Kensington lock on itself that would be an added bonus. I'm just worried having that sitting out behind the TV since it could easily be stolen when we have parties, or get beer spilled on it.

When I was in college, we put the "nice" stuff away for house parties. That meant the good LPs, books, etc were stashed in our respective rooms.

Didn't keep some jerk from pouring beer in the fish tank, though. Or peeing in the cat's litter box.

I would replace the Mini with a $35 chromecast and some 100mph mil-spec duct tape.

The problem with that is 1) I don't have a chromecast, plus I run XBMC with my movies stored on my external drives. 2) If I bought a chromecast and set up Plex, I would have to stream over WiFi because the router is in the living room. 3) We have parties or people over after bar close fairly frequently so it'd become a huge pain.

to what extent...

is someone willing to go to remove your equipment ... even a safe can be removed quickly and quietly in the size category you need. A rack-mounted lock box with security hardware would slow things down as long as the rack you mount it in is secure.

In your case a webcam mounted out of reach, stickies or labels advising videotaping in-progress and a Middle Atlantic lock box in a rack would probably work.

You can pick that up at B&H for $90.00 the rack is your challenge!
