I have been using my 2020 MacBook Pro all day. Left it for a little while and when I came back, the trackpad was locked. I could not press on it because it was locked in the down position and wouldn't click. No movement from the cursor, and all I could do was restart it. Upon reboot, all is fine again. Is this a hardware issue?

The trackpad is actually not a button, it vibrates to mimic a button press, but doesn’t actually move.

I’ve seen this occur occasionally. If you start seeing it all the time, I would then be a little more concerned and would get it checked out.

It does depress. You can either just tap with your finger or apply pressure and it clicks downwards. When locked, it was fully depressed.

It’s a vibrate to make you think it depresses but it doesn’t.

Turn your Mac off and try pressing it. It won’t click 😊

It does not depress, and the feeling you had is the same one when it's turned off. That's what the trackpad surface is really like, without power to the motor that Apple calls the haptic engine. This will happen during normal use only when the Mac has crashed or is severely overloaded (100% of CPU time used).

It is not necessarily a hardware issue, Macs can crash occasionally through bugs in the OS. It can be a hardware issue, if it keeps crashing you might wanna google for how to look at kernel panic logs and post a panic in this thread for other members to have a look at it.

If it’s a 2020 MacBook Pro it’s not a button, it’s just very good at making you think it is.

Turn off your Mac and try pressing it, it won’t move.
