IOKWARDI
From the program perspective, I have discovered, resolved and listed a server, my user has seen it in the list and wants to access a share. Do I use Directory Services (10.4 SDK) to do this?

Note that this operation should be independent of Finder: some weirdos like me turn Finder off most of the time in favor of something else, such as Path Finder.

If you are connecting to AFP shares you can use Directory Service silently to mount the necessary share and access your files. The 10.6.2 api is available at: http://developer.apple.com/referencelibrary/Networking/

For SMB you will probably get an authentication window when you use the CIFS API, even when you get the password from the keychain.

I'm not sure about NFS though.

The 10.6 API is not available to me. I was hoping for some sort of OS abstraction layer because I am just lazy, but oh well.
