Hello, I checked the Logic Board on my Mac 3.1and found that the small Heatsink became loose. The problem is that the hook where the clip is holding it down broke off.
I will attach a photo of that sink. In just wonder how important it is to have the heat sink on it. If it is very critical, I can take it apart, remove the logic board and solder a wire from the bottom. But this will be a lot of work. Since I don't know when that happen, it seem to run ok even without the heat sink, the only problem I have is that the Power light does not go off. The fan and the LED on the Memory Board go off, but not the Power Light.
I attach a photo of that part.
Thank you
Dorian

Below that heatsink is the chipset and yes, you need to repair it. Some people remove the metal clip and glue the heatsink to the chipset, there are special thermal pastes for that, but most people mix white silicone thermal paste with long cure epoxy, most common recipe is:

  • 2/3 white silicon thermal paste
  • 1/3 long cure bi-component epoxy.

Thank you for your reply. What would happen if I run it without the heatsink?

The chipset will overheat and damage the logic board. Glue it now, when you have time, repair it correctly. The mix of thermal paste and long cure bi-component epoxy is removable.

I have being using 1/3 of Araldite 24h cure for years, it's easier to remove when you need.

Never had this issue, did you looked at the Apple Technicians Guide to see if anything helps?
