Logic Board went, how do I get the info off...

I had a 700 Mhz G4 iMac.The logic board and/or power supply went. It wasn't worth the price to repair a slow compture of that sort, so I bought a new iMac (Intel) I had to have the machine for work for my small business so I couldn't wait 24-48 hours for the info to be transfered. Now I have harvested the hard drive out of the machine and put it into a external case. The drive shows up on Disk Utility but will my mount. I have taken the old HD off of Master, to Slave and it still will not let me access my old data. My fear is I'll have to drag the drive and my 20" beauty on a trip, take apart one of my friends old G4 towers, plug in the hard drive and start the computer off of it, then connect and do the migration. Otherwise it'll be $150 for data transfer from the Apple Store. Any help would be awesome!

Hmm... if Disk Utility is refusing to mount it, that's a bad sign. What you're doing should work perfectly if the disk and its format are ok. I don't think trying it in another computer will help.

Question: Can you see the volume name in Disk Utility, or does it just show up as a disk? If so, then there's probably something wrong with the format that is preventing it from mounting (tried the repair function? Maybe a different disk repair utility?).

If you can't see the volume name at all, that's a bad sign. If you're lucky it just doesn't like your external case for some reason. If you're not, when the computer went it took the drive with it. I've seen this happen--if the power supply dies violently, it can toast the electroncs of attached internal devices, including your drive. Alternately, it could have just badly corrupted the format, in which case drive repair utilities should help.

Try downloading the Data Rescue II demo and see if it can see the files on the disk--that'll tell you something.

I don't think that would help any since its not mounting. Try do a repair in disk utility. Like was suggested. Does it sound like the drive is spinning up or even trying?

In an external case it typically HAS to be Master, none other.
