Login screen Text Please help!

Hello, I am new to apple, just purchased an iMac off craigslist, and have a personalization question. I was able to change the user name and all that info just fine but when my computer first turns on and I am prompted to log in the previous owner has a text below the apple icon that i would like to change. Right now it says "Daves ********** iMac" well my name is not Dave and i dont care to have that on there every time i go to log in. I have done alot of searching and found where i can "change login text" but that is for one of the texts, not the one I am trying to figure out.. here is a sample picture, the text i have circled in red is the text i am trying to change, the text saying macbook pro is the only text i have successfully changed. (this is just a picture i got off the inter-web, not my actual login)

The thing you have circled is not what you are trying to change, that is a static picture. The text can be changed using Onyx.

I was able to change the picture, i changed it back to the stock apple logo same as in the picture above, and was able to change the text (the one in the picture "macbook pro") in onyx. But still not able to change the "dave" text.....

I can change it in Onyx. Under the Parameters>Login tab there is "Show message in the login screen" check box. Check it then enter your own thing.

If that is what you did, then clicking the "Dave's Computer" text change it to something else when it's clicked?

It appears that "Mac OS X" is part of the logo. One and the same picture. Maybe the guy made a backup file of the original logo and it's still in the same folder?

The box is checked and i changed the text to "welcome" before the text box was blank. logged back out and its still there, the text under it is what changed to welcome... i reset to default and it still didnt change anything.

this is how i changed the image from what was there before to the silver apple, i replaced the existing file with my new one...

Give us a screenshot of your Login Window, because you're not talking about what you have circled in your original post.

Sorry for my crappy camera... but here is my login screen

there is the apple, Daves imac, (date and time), and welcome above the username and password. I am able to change the apple image, the date and time, and the welcome lines, but cannot find anywhere to change the Dave line.

As Intell said, (and if I'm right in what I think you're saying), then:

Open the system preferences (the icon with the cogs on it).
Choose Sharing (it's under internet and wireless)
Change the Computer Name at the top of the window that's displayed.

That should be it, (hopefully)

i wish it was that easy... but no. in sharing the computer name is the name i used. I thought it might be because of another user, but the only 2 users are mine(admin) and guest. is there anything i can type in the terminal that you know of to change that line?

If you are on Leopard or Snow Leopard...

Navigate to System>Library>CoreServices>SecurityAgentPlguins>loginwindow.bundle>Contents>Resources> and copy the MacOSX.tif out of it and put it in the /Library folder. You'll need to press control as you click on the loginwindow.bundle and click "Show Package Contents" to get it open.

Now download Secrets. Once it's installed open System Preferences and open the Secrets pref pane. Click the System category on the right of the window. Then find "Login Window MAC OS X Title", once found click the selection to the right of it. Then navigate to the place where you put the MacOSX.tif, select it. Then log out to see if it is back to normal.

Note: Secrets is a powerful pref pane and can screw up your computer. If you are not a power user, I'd suggest you uninstall it after this by control clicking the pref pane in System Preferences and select Remove.
